Straights do love trash books like The Secret or 50SofG. HR and LOTR are overrated in a sense that straights love to go overboard with those two. Sure, go ahead and have yourself a 344th rewatch but learning a made up language or memorizing spells and ****? No thanks.
imabadkid Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 I don’t expect the girlz to know every Drake song but how do you avoid him or hip hop in general? It’s the most dominant genre rn. This is why we need gen z on here tbh… some of y’all are getting boring and we’ve resorted to the same Britney and Xtina fight threads every other week trying to revive a 20 year old feud This is actually a good question, there is A LOT that’s overrated but lemme think about it first
Robert Posted August 2, 2022 Posted August 2, 2022 Sports, movies focused on white straight guys where they miss the point entirely (Joker, Wolf of Wall Street etc), Elon Musk and cars.
Harrier Posted August 3, 2022 Posted August 3, 2022 Detached family homes in car-centric suburbs. The straights are out here clamoring for these generic ass houses in horrid areas 20+ minute drive away from literally anything. A nightmare

I truly would only rewatch Birds of Prey and The Dark Knight out of the DCU, and that's because Margot Robbie just KILLS it as Harley Quinn, and it's not another PG-13/family-friendly Marvel movie. And The Dark Knight was amazing because of Christopher Nolan. I didn't care for his other 2 Batman movies, but he knocked it out of the park with this one. Batman v Superman & Man of Steel, however, were so boring-- not even daddy Henry Cavill could save either film. Aquaman was fun, but it was way too long. Wonder Woman 1984 was a wash, which sucks because I actually liked the original (not enough to re-watch it because, man, is that film long). Suicide Squad wasn't as bad as the critics made it out to be, but nothing worth your time. The newest Suicide Squad was heaps better but nothing I'd own/watch again. Watchmen tried to do something different, but it's Zack Snyder, and of course he made it too long and couldn't help himself with the gratuitous slow-mo and garbage dialogue. Black Panther (MCU) was excellent & the only Marvel movie I'd rewatch, but that was thanks to Ryan Coogler, who gave us the just-as-great Creed and Fruitvale Station. Spider-Man: Homecoming was fun, but I didn't care for the first sequel, and I have no desire to see the third. Anything else (e.g. Iron Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Endgame) might "technically" be good movies, but the hero-narrative is so old and tired, and these movies didn't help me think otherwise. Even Thor, that's fun, is a movie I forgot about as I walked out the theater. Also, Thor 2, Iron Man 3, Black Widow, and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 were all painfully boring. If I didn't mention an MCU/DC movie here, I simply haven't seen it and don't plan to.

I'll give you disliking how heteronormative Wolf of Wall Street is, and how much it plays into the white-male-fantasy of making it "big" and scoring the girls/sports cars/pure coke, but I'd maybe give Joker some slack. The movie is about a vulnerable community (specifically the mentally-ill community) getting ROYALLY screwed over by the 1%. I saw the film as a wake-up call for an ableist and capitalistic America that gives the 98% (especially including its vulnerable communities) jobs that barely cover COL, slashing mental-health benefits that would benefit mostly everyone, and a society that says "you're not white and rich, the world doesn't care about you" to come to an end. Was it a perfect movie? Did it truly deserve that Best Picture nom? Most likely "no" to both, but I don't think Joker is a "straight white guy" film about a straight white guy that "misses the point." Joker is no hero, but neither is the society he is in-- if anything, society missed the point entirely. Edited August 3, 2022 by zasderfght

I actually liked Joker a lot but my point was more how so many people particularly straight white men tend to miss the point (not the movie itself) and idolise the character who is a victim of a cruel capitalist society. That being said there are films that do this better such as Parasite.
