AFRICA aka the best 80s song ever being 8x Platinum In reality, “Africa” should be 11x platinum making it the biggest-selling song from the 1980’s overall, just above “Thriller/Don’t Stop Believin”. It’s 3x platinum in Physical units and 8x Platinum in Digital/SPS units. In 1984, a platinum certification was 2M units sold. 3x platinum and above were awarded “Multi-Platinum” status until the RIAA changed the threshold in 1989. For some reason, however, the RIAA doesn’t combine the units of physical songs sold pre-1989 to what they’ve sold today, digitally or SPS wise. There are several big hits from the ‘80’s missing out on higher certs. because of that. Edited July 20, 2022 by GoodGuyGoneGhetto
