The Little Mermaid (2023) | Makes a BIG streaming splash on Disney+ | 16M views! 🫧🐚

With Summer beginning and kids starting the holidays, plus the usual late legs for family films in the summer, I'm not putting down any guesses for final gross.

Legs won't be as insane as Aladdin but I think they will still be strong. Plus internationally we still have Japan yet to open as well and that is always a wildcard no matter what.

The extremely good stabilization of the past two days is a very encouraging sign.

$10M OS Tuesday. Box office after 5 days is about $220M.

Very odd how people think that a woman wanting a man somehow makes her less strong, or lacking in agency. This is really an American point of view too, can't imagine Europeans sharing it.

So true.

The original fairytale is routinely held as being a direct allusion to Andersen's homosexuality and unrequited love for Edvard Collin. It's a relatively simple story pretty much *wholly* about forbidden love and there's genuine bravery in that. I support re-interpreting stories for sure but find it depressing and misplaced when modern interpretations dilute things down to "her love for the prince is actually incidental to her broader interest in human paraphernalia"...especially given the story's roots (like when Ariel finds the Eric statue the screenplay explicitly makes sure we know Ariel loves the statue for its artistry rather than because it depicts the man she loves, which feels like such a dishonest choice). A little mermaid falling in love with a human contains enough strength and resonance to carry you through. Too much else muddies the waters imo.

I actually think this version omitted a lot of the gay/queer sensibilities that made the 1989 version resonate so profoundly with people. The diegetic nature of the music - Triton's daughters being a performing troupe and Sebastian their composer, Ursula being a drag queen, removing some of Ashman's most iconic lyrics about gender (Vanessa's camp little villain song is gutted too), Ariel's sparkly transformation dress lol...each change is incidental but really builds up. Even PoYW has lost the yearning and desperate interiority that Howard Ashman fought so hard to bottle in the recording sessions with Jodi Benson. Halle's version is gorgeous but is absolutely pitched to balance narrative with spotify streams (the option-ups/riffs etc.) and you really lose something there. I found that to be a bit of a shame, especially after HCA is quoted at the start of the film and especially bc Rob Marshall is gay.

yes but they expect it to bring in the money on Disney+

Disney+ doesn’t bring in revenue which is why they’re cancelling everything, deleting shows and reworking Hulu. Iger admitted that they’re not making money on the platform. I expect Disney to cut their losses on this fast in the next week or so. The merchandise for the film is also reportedly not selling.

It’s a certain fringe segment that thinks that way, not the majority of Americans, which is why the industry is in so much trouble. People don’t relate to any of this. The entertainment industry needs to quit doing their marketing research via Twitter. Hollywood is a far Left echo chamber. They were dumbfounded that “Top Gun: Maverick” could be such a hit with the country. :rip: Anyone who doesn’t live in a bubble knew that that film would be a smash. People don’t want to be preached to. A lot of people are side eyeing this writers strike since these people are responsible for so much dreck and now want to be payed even more money. :clown:

Several of the dolls have been sat at #1 for weeks, if not months now. :skull:

WAS SO GOOD :jonny5:

I love Halle so much and Prince Eric was simply PERFECT for the role :smitten:

Aladdin dropped a heavy 38% on Wednesday. It should be expected for family films these days (as they benefit heavy from discounted Tuesdays). But last year's Wednesday after Memorial Wknd was abnormally soft. Most films fell between 5-20%. So Wednesday is a toss up. Low end $6.5M and high end $7.8M.

TLM 1st Tuesday was 2nd biggest of the year.

Imagine thinking she wants ignorant, racist fans. :toofunny3: It's clear which person has morals here.

NO SPOILERS

I don't call the actors by their name except for Halle because I don't know most of them:

Triton was a disaster. If his acting was a painting I would ask for a refund. Ursula was so-so.

Eric looked very charming but his script, body language and to a lesser degree acting could've done better. In some of his pics posted here he looked really bad but I did not see that at all. He approximated the physical appearance of the prince better than any other remake prince did. Better actor than Philip and not as much as Prince Charming in Cinderella.

The animals looked and acted soulless like in other remakes but more progressive than the Lady and the Tramp (the trailer) and a bit worse than the TLK.

Halle's acting was good but not as good as Aurora's and Cinderella's but still. Her lines were usually not very challenging and she sings or stays mute for 1/3 of film. So I cannot make a great judgment based on that. But she did approximate the mannerisms and the voice-acting of the OG Ariel better than Triton or Ursula did. Ariel in general is easier to act than Ursula or Triton so that gives Halle an advantage compared to the other two. But at the same time, Triton did not even bother.

This is an excellent hold. $300M domestic looks a lot more likely now which will spare Disney some blushes.
