Pop Girls' South Korean Year End Album Sales (2011-2021)

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

While the sales for local acts are currently reaching unprecedented heights, physical sales for international acts continue to plummet in South Korea. The yearly chart is usually full of soundtracks, cast recordings, classical music collections, various compilations, Chinese/Japanese releases by K-Pop groups, rock bands and solo male artists. However, a handful of our pop girls manage to make the ranking each year. While the numbers aren't huge, seeing just how few pop girls manage to crack the year end chart it's interesting to note which ones have enough selling power in such a fickle market to consistently chart.

If you know anything about south korean sales, you would know there is and has not been in audience for physical albums in korea in AGES. Its been a fandom thing since this decade. Even incredibly famous domestic singers hardly ever crack 10k sales. South Korea also has no such thing as digital album sales, all digital albums bought are just counted as individual digital single sales. The only singers who are selling albums in korea are idols and trot singers, who have idol-like fandoms.

Mind you, the majority of idol's albums sales in korea aren't even domestic, which I'm sure you're aware of. If international fans realized you could buy as many albums as you wanted and they'd still count for the chart (unlike billboard) the sales for western singers would skyrocket as well.

I can't believe these abysmal numbers are even being discussed :dies:

Great point. Most idols' songs absolutely TANK in the singles chart (Enhypen don't have one single top 100 hit in the Gaon Chart :deadbanana2:) despite the massive album sales. And even then, those "albums" are more like gadget kids with, maybe, some music inside.

Those sales are ridiculous. :rip:

And it has been that way since 2011.

Edit : still cool that every B's solo album made it. This just reminds how few solo she releases, in this time frame, she only had 3.

Does Rihanna have a South Korean publisher?

Just a reminder: Gaon (now renamed Circle Chart) does NOT track sales in South Korea. They track shipments from South Korean publishers. It’s why BTS’s numbers always count their entire global physical shipments whereas Girls’ Generation’s numbers only include their Korean physical shipments (they use different publishers for Japan, Taiwan, etc.).
