Halsey: what went wrong?

She was unstoppable in 2016-2018, with Closer and Without Me being massive hits for her. Closer is certified 14x Platinum and also did amazing in Australia, Canada, France which are big markets.

Her 2018 released song Without Me is also close to a Diamond certification in the U.S. and also did great in other markets:

But all her subsequent releases have not made much noise or were no able to live up to the success of the aforementioned singles. Graveyard, which is seen as the ''real'' lead single off of Manic, only went 2x Platinum and doesn't seem to have a lot of WW success either:

United States (RIAA)[66] 2× Platinum 2,000,000double-dagger

Then, the lead single off of her latest album barely made any noise:

So what went wrong? Why wasn't she able to gain more momentum? She could have easily had a string of hits if she wanted to, she fits right into that soundscape of that era. :michael:

I think WM was a fluke, she hasn’t had much solo success before or after that song :michael:

i think it's both music and personality

her personality screams tumblr girl u know? and this era is over

and she did a very praised sound with ler latest album but since it didn't pull numbers she tried to do another "without me" and it's just kinda boring

it's a combination of things

i do hope she finds a way to rebound soon tho, i listen to her a lot and think she deserves success

It's weird to me though that she wasn't able to get another solo hit. I think her sound works very well with current trends

She had a very cute fanbase during her more “alt” first 2 eras. I think her turning more commercial turned some of them off, but when she was being “commercial” she was more of just a faceless hook girl not delivering anything new or remarkable to keep her in GPs minds. Now she has a fanbase just big enough to give her decent debut weeks but nothing huge

"I Am Not a Woman, I'm a God" was not push like a typical single. It’s clear she wasn’t looking for chart success with this recent album. That era was the true definition of art to not charts.

Capitol replaced Katy with Halsey. And now Halsey herself is on her way out.

All the payola Capitol used for Katy in the past, went straight to pushing Halsey on the radio.

Wasn't Eastside a pretty big hit too? She was mostly a faceless radio artist tbh  :rip:

She should stick to releasing more albums like IICHLIWP, since it seems like she won't have another big hit again

Coming for Sky Ferreira was her first mistake

the change of direction of Manic ruined it i guess? Nightmare debuted at peaked at top 15 and while it wasn't a good follow up to Without Me (chart wise) she should've kept going with this direction, and if she still followed Manic with IICHLIWP, honey should've been pushed as the big radio single, it's more radio friendly than I'm not a woman i'm a god (was this even sent to radio?)

Seems like it. Kinda telling how 2/3 of her biggest hits aren't solo :deadbanana4:

She tried to be commercial before and after IICHLIWP tho but she just... couldn't. I think her time is up

She’s waffling between too many different styles & sounds to be able to leave a strong impression. She’s flip-flopped from alt to pop & back & forth again so many times that nobody knows what a Halsey song sounds like anymore

Talent, quality, range. Not everyone has that.

she had her time. without me was her final hit and she had a decent run with three moderately successful albums and her recent GRAMMY nominated album. i dont see a future commercial career ahead of her and thats fine. i do see her still putting out music

Her latest song is just not good enough, but her career is still strong! She needs to focus on things beyond radio hits bc the more you try to be generic for a radio hit, the less likely you are to get it (these days)

Also as long as the music is good, doesn't matter how it does!!

Give us another Manic, queen

she just never had it as a MPG... closer was a chainsmokers song and WM was a fluke that sounded like a rihanna ripoff

Yeah her career just reached a natural end. I also doubt she was trying for commercial success with iichl. I think she can have another era with moderate success

Mind you Future Nostalgia is more acclaimed and has seen more success than any Halsey album :deadbanana4:

1. She isn't that special

2. Her songs aren't that good.

3. Her attitude is obnoxious and rude

4. She's fake (try hard to be edgy)

5. Inconsistent with her music genre decisions.

She chose not to be a pop star :michael:

I saw her last week and she literally said that she lost herself at some point and was talking about how she "used to play huge shows when she was a popstar" but she chose art not the charts! (Also her wokeness took over)

this is where it went south for her too tbh. for the past 7 years or so of her being a mainstream artist she has never really built  a distinct sound that makes her stand out amongst her peers if that makes sense.

everything she releases doesnt feel passionate enough. her biggest songs could have literally been anyone’s and thats no shade. i guess from the get go, she was just extremely lucky that she collected a handful of fans from that 2016 hit she had.

dua could have made the same exact mistake if she didnt switch up the game for future nostalgia. she avoided a bullet there as she made a project that made her stand out.

Actually it was her indie era Badlands that built her the fanbase.
