Apolonio
Quote A vegan mother is facing life in prison for murdering her 18-month-old child who starved to death on a strict raw fruit and vegetable diet. A Florida jury convicted Sheila O’Leary, 39, on Wednesday of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, aggravated manslaughter, child abuse and two counts of child neglect in the death of her son, Ezra. Ezra weighed 17 pounds – seven pounds below average – when he died in his sleep in 2019. Following Ezra’s death, Sheila and her husband, Ryan, told authorities that the family followed a strict vegan diet limited to "only raw fruits and vegetables" and "breast milk," according to News Press. At the time of Ezra’s death, their three other children – all under the age of 11 – were suffering from malnutrition and dehydration https://www.fox29.com/news/vegan-florida-mother-convicted-of-starving-toddler-to-death-with-strict-raw-fruits-vegetables-diet.amp Sickening

Illuminati
To be fair the reason they were malnourished and dehydrated was not because they were vegan but because she was a terrible parent. Mikeymoonshine
Vegan diets can be safe for babies and children assuming they were breast fed of course (there is vegan baby formula but it's not particularly common). There's a lot of Myths about vegan diets being inherently unhealthy but both my siblings were vegan their entire life and neither of them ever suffered from malnutrition. Also a lot of parents starve their kids. A diet consisting of raw fruit and vegetables only is obviously unhealthy for anyone especially a child and I know tonns of vegans who would agree. Most of these cases are people who don't know how to get a balanced diet as a vegan or lunatics that subscribe to hippy nonsense like frutarianism. Plenty of people have health issues because of their diet and the vast majority of them are not vegan.

Jagger
RAW food only??? Wtf the whole reason our species boomed in evolution and brain size is because we started cooking our food. These parents should be jailed for life. Poor children

I didn't attack anyone for not being vegan nor did I express any opinion on the morality of anyone else's diet as long as they are feeding their kids healthily. I'm not vegan, but even I know a vegan diet that is closely monitored can actually be VERY healthy. You don't have to worry about the bad cholesterol in foods, you probably won't have issues with constipation since most vegan foods are higher in fiber (the healthy foods, anyway). Veganism for kids is definitely harder to control/manage, but veganism is not to blame here. It is clear the mother is to blame, for not properly doing her research or consulting and following medical professional's medical advice.

6_INCH_HEELS
Honestly, things like this shouldn't be forced unto children. Let them grow up and decide what they like to eat. These parents were just negligent all around and no baby or child deserves to starve to death. Poor thing.

Open question. Cases of parents who malnourished their children are by far larger in meateaters-carnivorous people, those episodes always existed, how many times we have read stories of children being found malnourished with their parents feeding them with small quantities of junk food, It's not even a matter of being vegan, on the contrary serious vegan parents in general tend to pay more attention on their children diet consulting specialists and doctors in order to not make them missing any fundamental nutrient, thing that can happen even with a carnivore diet if it's not right balanced. Overfeed people (especially in the young population) with junk-fast food habits and the lack of nutrition education is definitely the biggest issue in the US society with obesity and consequent heart conditions who have became the most common cause of death in the US than some random rare cases of psychos who decide to feed their children on a senseless raw vegetable diet.
