NOW Posted June 27, 2022 Posted June 27, 2022 (edited) Quote The official music video was premiered by Noisey on June 27, 2012[10], and on September 5, 2012, it was posted to Del Rey's Vevo channel. The video was directed by Anthony Mandler in May of the same year. It features previous musical collaborator and rapper ASAP Rocky as her love interest, rather than Bradley Soileau who featured in her previous two videos. Mandler and Del Rey intended for the video to be about loss and destruction rather than accurately interpreting history. The treatment for the video was written by Del Rey with ASAP Rocky in mind. Del Rey described the video saying "definitely the most beautiful thing I've ever done." It was met with generally favorable reviews and was nominated at the 2012 UK Music Video Awards for Best Pop Video - International and Best Styling in a Video. In 2018, the video placed #51 on Rolling Stone's '100 Greatest Music Videos of the 21st Century' list, adding "All of Lana Del Rey’s music videos are cinematic -- it’s kind of her thing -- but “National Anthem” has a movie-quality plot to boot. NOW Posted June 27, 2022 Author Posted June 27, 2022 From the BTD visual retrospective Billboard article earlier this year: Quote The video was shot in New York City, with Lana’s creative team only having two weeks to plan and execute the shoot. “The creative was and is not an easy type of project to pull off in a short period of time,” says Heather Heller, a producer of the ‘National Anthem’ video, “especially with the locations and storyline needed. How do you re-create the JFK assassination with A$AP Rocky as JFK in a music video in less than two weeks?” The “National Anthem” video was unlike anything Heller had ever worked on before, but ultimately, the challenge of the shoot is what excited her about the project. “We set out to find the locations that would look like Texas and Cape Cod in New York, and ultimately we did. I had always been fascinated with Camelot and the entire era and story. It’s both so tragic, yet romantic and glamorous at the same time. When I read the concept I was completely hooked.” Heller, Mandler and crew filmed the video using super 8, 16mm and 35mm film. Lana’s longtime stylist, Johnny Blueeyes, helped her recreate Monroe and Jackie O’s aesthetics – but according to Heller, becoming these icons “was all Lana,” as she easily assumed form after the production team set the stage. https://www.billboard.com/music/pop/lana-del-rey-born-to-die-videos-directors-1235023821/
