No obviously the era isn't over? I mean there is no noise at all… and music videos, promo or even one performance

I still can’t help but feel like I’d prefer a different vocal aesthetic and based on what I’ve read and seen I’m not the only one. There’s a lot to unpack here in terms of pop politics but after watching dozens of reviews I have noticed that other than black gay men and black lesbians a lot of black reviewers have picked it as their least favorite track and a lot of white reviewers (that aren’t just gay) and are audiophiles have instantly made Charli and Sophie references. This is all anecdotal, but I’ve taken in enough reviews (written and video) now on that track to draw some loose conclusions. The discourse from some of the Hive I’ve read online immediately pouncing on anyone that’s implied they’d prefer someone else with “black people can do hyperpop too omgz11!11” has been really…unhealthy. Again, just a few, no broad brush, but it gets outsized attention. In their (and my) defense I’d also be fascinated to hear it sung from someone like Santigold. Also can’t help but wish Bey did lean into the political on America Has a Problem as opposed to shifting gears straight into the mafia don metaphors. Maybe that’s for the next series installment. I realize it’s a damned if she does damned if she doesn’t scenario in terms of the usual thinkpieces she’d get in response similar to the reasons why she doesn’t really do interviews anymore but that’s a separate conversation. Lots more to say later but that’s what’s front of mind for me. As a Charlie stn and a hive, I dont really care about AUIYM it’s not about her vocal performance but that sing just leads nowhere. I was expecting a major hyperbop drop agter the buildup but there is really nothing going on on that song. Track 10 remains superior

Golden Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 I think I've solidified my Top 3 and it won't change anytime soon... 1. GOD'S GROOVE 2. HEATED 3. ALIEN SUPERSTAR Thique is my least favorite song on the alberm.
brenda-walsh Posted September 29, 2022 Posted September 29, 2022 AS has much more of a hyperpop feel than AUIYM

It's a sensitive topic but there's an interview Santigold did ages ago right after her debut where she said she felt critics and audiences boxed her into doing "alternative R&B" (an overused hype term that's lost all meaning) instead of truly her take on say, alternative rock. Kelela's said similar in interviews regarding electronica crossover but they've both been cautious to not ruffle feathers. Both have said even the indie R&B scene in the States and Europe is still very insular and rigid in terms of cultural expectations and preferring certain sonics. Many audiences to an extent are downstream from these expectations put upon them by tastemakers which is why it's reflected in preferences (at least when it comes to more mainstream black artists) I've seen, with Beyonce being the latest example. It's complicated but stereotypes of black people being expected to stick with R&B and being boxed in in the process.
