Interestingly, I can speak about 40 year olds since I’m the same age as Bey. If any other artist had a song, at 40,talking about dropping it like a thotty, I’m sure y’all would find it cringeworthy as well. She is a Queen, and yes, I feel this song is beneath her at this stage in her career. Any questions?

If you feel old at your 40, doesn't mean Beyoncé should feel old as well Now sit your old ass down and let Bey have her fun

The whole point is bridging the gap of religion/freedom of choice and how they often are forced to co-exist, especially amongst women from the bible belt. It's def not for everyone, but trust me, it serves a purpose and it has an audience.
swissman Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 (edited) the CHURCH GIRL discourse is weird because 1) the song is amazing and 2) why is it a problem if she mentions dropping it "like" a thotty? the whole point of the song is that this person is doing something that she is not expected to do... namely be sexual despite going to church. similarly it can be read as a statement of intent that no, being a certain age or having kids doesn't mean you have to suddenly be this covered up and non-sexual person and that being sexual actually has no effect on the person you are. I love how Beyoncé has so many themes in her work across her discography, but as time goes on she hones in on them and gets more specific. This is kind of no different than a song like Naughty Girl where there is a contrast between how the protaganist thinks she should act and what she wants to be (the story is that a girl doesn't know what's gotten into her but she's feeling all naughty)...all the way into Partition where she's more outright and proud of her sexuality but is still compartmentalizing it ("Driver roll up the partition please") and making it more priviate vs. CHURCH GIRL where now she's a bit more proud and saying she can be all these things (naughty and nice) at once. swissman Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 (edited) the thing about this album is it seems so fun but really it packs so much meaning into it, sneaking the points into the amusement of it all... i'm really impressed how it manages to be from the perspective of someone in a club, feeling herself, realizing things, falling in love, being a bit messy, etc., rather than just being simply music made for a club setting. It's a female empowerment anthem coming from a different angle. I grew up in a Baptist church...so culturally...the song just hit for me in a different way from the first listen. It was the song I was most looking forward to from the title. I find the verses to be emotional & empowering IMO just like BMS. People are missing the real context just thinking about the "drop it like a thotty" section. Edited August 17, 2022 by giRLbye.

giRLbye. Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 "Move" is amazing...the ENTIRE song....first part & last. I love the energy Grace Jones gives in the first half...I hope she's in the music video too.

And then Bey takes that second half to another level. MOVE >>>>>>>>>>

BnPac Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 I love Church Girl. It takes a little to get into but it's so good. The juxtaposition of the gospel and the raunchy part is what makes it so special. She took that contradiction - that actually isn't- in the title and it works so well. Most of all, I love the message : church girls having the right to love themselves, be free, express themselves however they choose to and to act raunchy and sexy if need be. There's no contradiction, both can co-exist. Now musically, it's as weird as most Bey's lead singles, I'm actually surprised she didn't release it first instead of BMS (and Thank God!!) , that's just the type of weird, inaccesible that screams B so I completely understand that people don't vibe with it on a musical standpoint.
Lose My Breath Posted August 17, 2022 Posted August 17, 2022 Church Girl is like Countdowns big, slutty sister, and I love it
