Bey'Knight Posted July 29, 2022 Posted July 29, 2022 RENAISSANCE REVIEW IM THAT GIRL Atypical start to a Bey music but once the beat kicks in, I got into it. Reminds me of late night vibing in a club. Love how relaxed Bey sounds on this. I love how she references being drunk on love. Akins back to both Drunk in love and Break my soul. I see this being used on an Issa Rae HBO show COZY This is another bop that’ll do well in the clubs. I really love Bey’s vocal delivery on this as well. It’s the opposite of her performance on 4. She didn’t lie about the haters here. Seems like self-love will be a theme on this album and I’m here for it. ALIEN SUPERSTAR OK I was worried this would be a letdown because the first minute is mostly talk. I see why people like it. I love the chorus but I think it will take a few more listens to fall in love with the track as a whole. Album is super cohesive so far CUFF IT This is the first instance of a traditional Beyoncé song, albeit the heavy use of swearing. I’m going to listen to the clean version of the album as well. This is one where she can really go crazy with the vocals live. I’d be here for it being a single. ENERGY Someone compared this to Forward on Lemonade and I see why. It’s okay but it’s all rap talking, no singing. First ok track. BREAK MY SOUL Def the safest track for radio from all I’ve heard so far. Wasn’t the biggest fan of this upon release but it fits neatly with the soundscape of the album. I’m glad every other track so far (except Energy) is more interesting and ballsy than this. She cute though. CHURCH GIRL This starts of soulful but I know it’s not gonna start that way. Every song has had a switch-up. Bey is sick for serving that and church girl on the same track ha. Looking fwd to the choreo for this the most. The harmonies at the end reminds me of the end of can’t stop the feeling by Timberlake PLASTIC OFF THE SOFA Right time in the tracklist to slow things down. I’ll say it again, Bey’s vocals on this album is like honey. Whoever made the comparison to DIL-Bey is right on the money. I feel like this could’ve been on any of her first 5 albums except maybe IASF. VIRGO’S GROOVE This is a quintessential escapist track. I dare you to have a lick of worry while listening to this song. It encapsulates Bey’s caption and overall message for this album. It serves sex but not in a raunchy way Cus her delivery is perfectly velvety. You can vibe along with your parents in the room. I’d be curious to see what a radio edit would sound like but I’m glad she didn’t compromise her art to fit tiktok demo MOVE Feck! I think I’m in love. This has me ready to dance. Pls pls pls Beyonce make a video for this. Y’all didn’t praise this enough. I even saw some negative reaction. This is right up my alley. I’d have been happy with an album full of this and no, it’s not a The Gift reject. Our sound is not that homogenous. HEATED Wow. The second half is even better than the first. Heated should’ve been on the Playlists and should absolutely be a future single. I think this might be my favourite track so far. Who said the album was missing hooks and melodies? How can you not remember this track when you finish? Love Bey being her own guest rap artist. She was serving Pink Friday Nicki on the second half of this. If she was dragging Azealia, then I say, good riddance. THIQUE This is a song to play in the mirror and feel yourself like Jack Rabbit. To play with your friends while you get ready for a night out. I really love how dynamic every track is, no matter how it starts you know there’s more to come production-wise (except energy and break my soul). This is no exception, though slightly more repetitive than I’d like. Bey’s vocals at the end are chef’s kiss. ALL UP IN YOUR MIND I can’t praise her vocals enough on this album. I don’t even know what she’s singing about here. It’s just soothing listening to the different textures she conjures up with her voice. Bey sounds crystal clear never before. AMERICA HAS A PROBLEM Ok this isnt what I expected based on the title. Why wasn’t this flagged as a song with single potential? It goes off. It works for the club and radio. It’s not too long either. If savage and mi gente can be hits, radio doesn’t mind Bey’s rap singing esp in the age of Doja. This is another that I need a video for. PURE/ HONEY OK this is transporting me back to the first half of the album. Btw this whole album is a soundtrack to 90s Runway show. I see the comparison to Todrick Hall here. It even sounded like him hollering in the background. This might just be gayest track on the album. Yes, getting the Prince feels and MJ off the wall throwback on Honey. I also get the Ciara comparison. Bey just sounds better than all of them with her execution. It ends way too soon. Should’ve been it’s own song. SUMMER RENAISSANCE This is the song with a sample that I recognise besides break my soul. I saw a lot of praise for this from the illegal listeners. I love the hook but I’m not in love with it as a whole. I can see myself ending my listening on Honey after the first month or so unless it grows on me. OVERALL FIRST IMPRESSION Bey hasn’t made a non-cohesive album since IASF but she really perfected the art on this album. We should’ve seen this coming when she made a 44-song track listing on Homecoming sound like they were all created in a single studio session. The way the tracks flow into each other like Madonna’s confessions on the dance floor really accentuates the listening experience. It feels transcendent; for an hour, you are not of this world. I felt lifted like I’m the King of the Clouds. One influence i haven’t seen mentioned much is Janet. The sensuality and spoken words is reminiscent of her 90s albums. If you are looking for the deep lyricism of Lemonade or the frankness of self-titled or the gritty vocals of 4, this album is not for you and that’s ok. The lyrics may sound simplistic on the surface but I know there’s more to unpack because Bey’s projects are always layered. I hope Dissect podcast analyses the whole album. Nothing on this album is by accident. Bey is very upfront about her intentions on this and it does exactly what it says on the tin. The influences are direct but never overt or overshadow Beyoncé. She played with her voice here more than ever. Renaissance is made for euphoric escapism with kaleidoscope lighting up your world. At 40, Bey could’ve easily relegated her sound to impotent adult contemporary saccharine radio fodder that doesn’t move the needle. Instead she’s delivered her most experimental, most exploratory, most profanity-laden body of work ever and I’m here for it. TOP THREE Move Heated America has a problem BOTTOMS Energy Summer renaissance

I'm surprised how different trinities are from a member to the other. Move wasn't instant, I admit but it grew on me.
