Weld_E Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 Quote Lightyear is latest film from the studio to be banned in various Middle East countries, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Sources tell THR the decision is linked to the inclusion of a same-gender kiss in Pixar’s Toy Story prequel spinoff. The scene, involving the female character Hawthorne (voiced by Uzo Aduba) and her partner, was originally cut from the film, but reinstated following the uproar surrounding a statement from Pixar employees claiming that Disney had been censoring “overtly gay affection” and Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s handling of Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Lightyear now becomes the latest in a growing list of major Disney features that have faced issues in Gulf countries due to scenes involving LGBTQ references or topics, which often fall foul of censors for theatrical releases due to homosexuality being officially illegal across the region. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/lightyear-banned-gulf-saudi-lgbt-1235163872/
sourtwink Posted June 13, 2022 Posted June 13, 2022 the way disney ALWAYS makes their lgbtq+ representation gay women because they’re more palatable to homophobes than gay men are yet it still always flops for them

The latest Disney films I remember with same sex relationships or gay characters are: a gay man in Beauty and The Beast, a gay make couple in Eternals, a gay guy in Jungle Cruise, the queer boutique owner in Cruella and most recently America’s mothers in DS&TMOM, so it seems kinda even?

And when they serve "gay male" representation, it's "not canon" (despite being a better match than the actual canon)

The only confirmation of these gay men are typically confirmed by production and news articles. There's no gay kiss for them and the representation is BARELY representation. Just alluding to gayness. Lesbians are definitely more represented outwardly.

And it's always a 3 second scene so they can easily edit it for China and the Middle East. It's so embarrassing
