They’re so close which means it’s basically because everyone knows them.

:bibliahh:

Literally never ever met someone who did not know who Britney was.

MJ died like 12-13 years ago, of course he will only get less and less famous with time. As if young people today know him :dies:

it says of all time, not of 2022 and young people today absolutely know him considering he gets waay more daily streams, yearly sales, yt views etc... than she does.

This might be difficult for some people to come to terms with, but there are people over 20 years of age who have never listened to a Michael Jackson song and who cannot name a single song by the Beatles.  And yet, everyone knows who Britney Spears is, including Gen Z, Millennials, their parents, and most likely their grand parents.  This poll is about "the number of people who have HEARD OF a music artist" not their actual streaming or sales numbers.

@OP The most interesting part of this is how if you select Contemporary Music Artists, not only is Gaga #1, but she is the most popular artist to Boomers.  Soccer moms and jazz music really came through  :deadbanana4:

They're so close to each other (#1 98%, #10 96%) that they probably all fall within the same margin of error. And even if they don't, they're at the same level of recognition.

If favorite crime can decide what study is right and what is wrong based on what he believes then… :dies:

It must mean YouGov is deliberately lying to everyone !!

So what explains the Backstreet boys? Britney was clearly placed at number one due to the conservatorship. But MJ will forever be known like marilyn Monroe, Elvis and the Beatles.  I don't know anyone who doesn't know who MJ is....unless they like 5 and maybe even some of then even know.

No lies were told.

But good luck telling an MJ or Beatles fan that. For better or for worse, Britney is insanely well known across every living generation, she is perhaps one of the biggest celebrities of all time and everyone has an opinion on her. Very impressive that Gaga is up there, though I do think Beyoncé should be higher given she has similar mass appeal to Britney, but perhaps not the controversy to match it?

It is sad that even with the whole paedophile controversy MJ still flopped on this chart and is increasingly forgotten.

I didn't make this poll which surveys millions of people... you can continue calling people delusional but it's not going to change the results.

Britney wasn't "placed" at number one, do you not understand how surveys and polls work?  There wasn't a conspiracy to place Britney or anyone on this list in a specific position, what are ya'll so dense?  The list also updates, so maybe MJ will be #1 by this time next year.  That's the point of this, to gauge fame and popularity as time passes.  I think this poll also includes some type of "intensity" metric, as in, not only "Do you know of Britney Spears?" but "On a scale of 1-10, how famous is Britney Spears?", which is a legitimate metric to include if this poll is to have any relevance.

It's about fame...meaning how many people know you and research you.

Keep in mind Britney has her rise, fall and comeback and after comeback which was covered by new outlets for all generations.

Baby boomers and the silent generation knew her in the 2000s...the younger generations know her a different way for the 2010s/2020s

There are alot of younger generations who are not familiar with MJ believe it or not so it's no surprising that MJ isn't #1. Not far apart though

I'm surprised byBSB but I forgot how massive they were at their peak and then there touring in 2010s.

You are also having a bad moment constantly posting about it in this thread.

You'd be surprised how people of certain generations are not familiar with MJ

He's not that far off  from her. To be fair, coverage of tabloid fodder didn't get big with him until later in the 80s.

You have to keep in mind this is not just music based but interest based and Britney's phenomenal rise, peak, downfall, comeback and legacy sustainability which impact paparazzi law changes and soon conservatorship abuse changes were all captured during the internet age, new coverage and magazine and other media outlet coverage.

Britney is embedded in pop culture beyond music or entertainment for the good, bad and ugly reasons (much like MJ) but understand the first part of his career in the 70s was relatively scandal free and wasn't as continuous as his career post Off the wall.

Not everything is about hating on Britney, luv
