Not surprising. This movie screams Murica war propaganda.

Americans keep track of the race of moviegoers? :deadbanana:

Yes. I was very proud of my people when they turned out for our rare movies. We're about 6% of the movie audience but:

38% Asian for Crazy Rich Asians's opening audiences

18% Asian for Shang Chi's opening.

Except this excludes Latinos, many of whom do not identify as white.

I mean

As of 2019, here is the current distribution of the U.S. population by race and ethnicity:

  • White: 60.1% (Non-Hispanic)
  • Hispanic: 18.5%
  • Black: 12.2%
  • Asian: 5.6%
  • Multiple Races: 2.8%
  • American Indian/Alaska Native: 0.7%
  • Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander: 0.2%

It rubs me the wrong way how people expect non whites to be the dominant market in the US when 76% of the country is basically white. like inclusivity is cool and I'm all up for it. But what's the point of dragging something for being too white on a white dominant country?

Population
White alone, percent  76.3%
Black or African American alone, percent(a)  13.4%
American Indian and Alaska Native alone, percent(a)  1.3%
Asian alone, percent(a)  5.9%

It should be noted though that this particular film pulled a percentage of caucasian audiences we haven't seen since American Sniper. It's less about white people being the majority (as you pointed out numerically it does make sense why they would be) it's about how much of a majority they made up for this particular film. Typical blockbuster films see white audiences in the 40th percentile and low 50s. The fact that this went up to 66% for the long weekend is not something we typically see. It demonstrates the appeal films like this have over middle America (which comprised many of the top theaters reported in the states, even beating out the usual suspects NYC/LA)

What an ignorant comment :rip:

You do realize racism is alive and well in the United States and observing the patterns of particular groups of people allows us to understand how representation matters :toofunny2: You can't make those arguments if you don't acknowledge that race has an important factor to play in the lives and decisions of the people from this country. Also, I haven't seen anyone in this thread overtly say in all seriousness that this film is racist :rip: it's just a discussion about the demographic diversity (and lack thereof) for this film. Your comment is giving 'I don't see color' vibes. Until every person in this country is treated equally we can't just ignore race as a factor, that's why implementing methods of documenting peoples' choices can be highly beneficial for the progress of the stigmatized.

To be fair, I don’t tracking which race is watching a movie would resolve any of the things you mentioned :toofunny3:

I only watched Top Gun 1 because of that sexy scene of Tom Cruise in his tighty whities but I don’t really have any desire to watch part 2. Let’s be honest, most of the people that care for movies like this are conservative rednecks.

It’s a Britney Stan. We know how they get when POC speak up about issues.

I understand how it might seem inconsequential but representation has shown some astounding effects particularly on youths who are members of marginalized communities. It’s a double edged sword because studios will always put profit at the forefront but telling narratives that are more inclusive does impact people’s lives

If it’s just for tracking this bolded part, then it makes some sense.
