I’m really wondering what plans Hipgnosis and Blackstone have in plans to make money off these catalogs in the future? The streams and physical sales are not going to claw profits and mechanical/publishing royalties from touring / radio is very volatile.

My thoughts on this. Can't think of how they can justify this. I'd need to see numbers before any conclusions but I'm skeptical.

Now that physical sales are literally dead and streaming does not pay artists enough, I'm sure it's more profitable in many ways to sell his catalogue than to keep it. Music doesn't make you money anymore, like at all. That's why no one wants to release albums :deadbanana2:

That's what I really wonder too tbh.

For example Bruce Springsteen's recent $500M (!) deal, where he sold his entire catalog, including publishing rights:

How the hell do the new rights-holders plan on making back that money?

Yes, Springsteen is one of the biggest names ever in music, but like 99% of his success lies in the past.

He doesn't have any album on Billboard's pure album sales chart right now, so his current pure sales are negligible, and he's also not on Spotify's top 200 most streamed artists chart either.

Does publishing really pay that much that his catalog would warrant a half a billion price tag? Idk.

everytime a song gets used its generating money... and springsteen has a handful of classics... in fact he has quite some 100M sons on spotify...and just with born in the USA... that alone will make 500M $

music is not one moment thing. music is everywhere and used all the time. its covered, its sampled, its used for commercials, its used in games, films, rerealeased.... I mean...

Justin Timberlake sold the rights to his song catalog to Blackstone Inc.-backed Hipgnosis Song Management, Dow Jones reported, citing fund executives.

The deal was valued at just above $100 million, Dow Jones reported, citing people familiar with matter. It gives Hipgnosis full ownership and control over the pop star’s interest in some 200 songs he wrote or co-wrote spanning his career.

So we've got the official confirmation of the amount! Seems right and this doesn't preclude him from still releasing going forward.

it's interesting to see those 2 sides of the industry now

we have artists like selena that is more and more owner of her own material

Revelacion is "SMG (Selena Music Group) distributed by Interscope"

and now (on youtube) we can see that Rare and the Droplets are also like this and no longer only "Interscope Records", she got the rights.

Olivia already started her career already like this, "Olivia Rodrigo distributed by Interscope"

and on the other side we have artists just selling everything and that's it

i think it makes sense for the artist that want to quit and live a relaxed life -- get the money and they're free to do whatever they want w/ a lot on the pocket.

if they keep active i find it weird.

"What Goes Around..." was NOT about Britney. It was about his best friend Trace Ayala and Elisha Cuthbert.

That seems a bit low or Nelly’s seems too high because JT should be able to at least triple her amount.

He literally has 4 successful eras and an abysmal bomb so it adds up.

His record deal probably had a lower share to the artist than Nelly’s, considering his catalogue belongs to Sony/RCA and they’re notoriously a mess.

The only way JT could end up earning $100m from music catalogue is by touring, so I wonder how, and if, his % from that will be heavily affected :michael: it was the right call if he didn’t care about ever getting his masters’ ownership.

Since he only sold publishing rights, he should still earn his % from songwriting and producing right?
