Miracle Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 The mid 2010s to now box office and mainstream film discussion has girated, mostly, towards superhero movies. Besides some lucky high budget action films like 1917, the rare romantic drama like ASIB and the always succesful Disney remakes and animated features, the box office has been dominated by superhero movies, especially Marvel's. Like with everything else in mainstream media, there's trends that dominate for relatively short periods of time. Romantic comedies in the 80s, high dramas like Titanic in the 90s have been relegated to success in streaming platforms or awards season; 3D movies, that were the previous buzz before superhero movies are nowhere to be seen and they need a miracle to come back (Avatar 2 maybe?), so, when will the superhero movies fad pass? Will it still be relatively succesful when something new comes? What's the likely next niche of movies to find success? I would say movies based on games have potential, especially with the success of both Sonic The Hedgehog movies and Detective Pikachu, but it's gonna filmmakers to actually make more palatable films in this genre to fully blossom
Virgos Groove Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 It's been over 10 years since it began. It's pretty clearly not a fad.
Brando Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 So fk*** tired of Superhero movies. They aren't terrible, but they are so overdone and super predictable that it's nauseating at this point. Bring back quality sci-fi blockbusters that are unique.
Europe Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 There is no sure way to tell if it will ever pass. The current generation has a weird and very strong reverence towards comics and these stories based on them. So as long as they are alive, these kinds of movies will have an audience. So like, at least 30 more years? I am very curious about what will come next, what will be the next big movie craze, but I don't know if it will come anytime soon.
Distantconstellation Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 Its not a fad. Disney will be making Xmen movies and they will finally go back the 90s glory they once had. Starting with them rebooting Xmen the animated series which is coming next year.
zaso Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 i think that they've peaked in the 2010s. superhero films will always be successful at the boxoffice but i don't think we will have another decade of back to back massively hyped films that are actual events like in the 2010s anymore. the hype for them is just not the same i'm curious to see what the next movie craze will be though, i just hope it's not rom-coms again

There is a theory that people don't want something new (unique), they want something that they already like and they are familiar with. That is why Disney remakes / Superhero movies are a safe investment, they are connected to each other and audiences know what to expect. When a movie veers from this formula, investors get nervous.
Sprawl Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 Not anytime soon that’s for sure. Audiences love the theories and everything surrounding superheroes, even if they’re not “stans”. The twitter bubble will keep fuming for at least another 20-30 years, because the GP will still be stanning. I do agree, however, more movies should have the same kind of exposure; though there’s no guarantee the response will be the same
Gesamtkunstwerk Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 People are bound to get bored at some point, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Maybe because Superhero movies are loud, bombastic and cgi-filled, audiences want something completely opposite. Kinda like when 80's action movies were all the rage and then the 90's audience favoured more stripped down and down-to-earth movies.
TheFameCurse Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 Not you talking about fads with that avi. Gooorl.
magazine Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 I fear the BTS of movies will never end, unfortunately
Danny789 Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 Neva, it’s so amazing and surreal to live in a world where Thanos is a household name. I’m never going back!!!
Pink Matter Posted May 24, 2022 Posted May 24, 2022 Considering we've had superhero films produced as early as the 70s and 80s (Superman and Batman), and they're STILL a huge form of media in the year of 2022, this "fad" isn't going away anytime soon
Just a Gay on ATRL Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 They’re not a fad. They will be made as long as movies remain a pop culture juggernaut. Maybe the romantic comedy formula that worked in the 80s/90s/00s is stale af and doesn’t work anymore, for example? It’s not all superhero movie’s fault. The non-superhero and non-horror movie genres need to step their ***** up. Besides superhero, horror, and maybe animated children’s movies, has any other movie genre really been giving much since 2010 onward?
Gorjesspazze9 Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 They won’t ever go away. Marvel proved that it’s a long lasting genre, as they are the most successful Film Franchise of all time. Similar to how Starwars was, they still make star wars becuase there will always be a market for it. In ShowBiz, as long as thier is money to be made it won’t fizzle out.
Oceania Posted May 25, 2022 Posted May 25, 2022 The modern superhero curse craze actually started with 'Iron Man' back in 2008, so it's 14 years already. I can't believe it's as old as the Twilight/Vampire trend .

A true trend setter
MadonnasBoyfriend Posted May 27, 2022 Posted May 27, 2022 wasent there a superman episode of i love lucy? they been doing that **** forevs
Young Volcanoes Posted May 27, 2022 Posted May 27, 2022 I think people will start moving on around 2025-2027. They're already starting to criticize Marvel's movies for being repetitive
Cutthroat Posted May 27, 2022 Posted May 27, 2022 Superheroes have never been and will never be a fad. That’s like calling the horror genre a fad. Superheroes are here to stay. Lucky us.
