It's hard to gleam that from the lyrics, which are so generic they sound like they were written by a corporate marketing committee

And he's not attractive so I'm not sure what you're going on about...?

You are well aware he has millions of fans who think otherwise. Yall will say this then rant about how hes benefitting from pretty privilege in the same breath lmaoo

Okay and y’all dragged Lewis Capaldi for being ugly and making the same music, so what are we trying to do here? :skull:

1. I’ve never dragged Lewis Capaldi for anything other than his music. :skull:

2. Lewis Capaldi - like Ed Sheeran - is/was critically loathed while Harry Styles is treated like a new Bowie when the only difference between him and the others is his perceived physical attractiveness and how his music is presented.

The point is, all of you are in here saying he’s ugly and his music is overrated, yet at the same time saying he benefits from being conventionally attractive. What is the truth :skull: some of the people in this thread are grasping at straws to justify their hatred for him and his music, rather than just saying they don’t like it. And it IS giving Lorde “Solar Power” teas - some of y’all want these singers to be as miserable as y’all! Stop projecting and go listen to your “dark” music and leave us happy and pretty people alone!

I mean looks have always been central to having "cool factor", all the way back to Woodstock.

Ed's looks actually helped him in a weird way because he was pitched to us as someone who makes ~real music because he looks like he just rolled out of bed, compared to prim and proper popstars. It allowed him to disguise his shallow, generic music as way deeper than it actually is.

Acting like the music that Harry Styles makes and the music that Ed Sheeran makes are on the same calibre is just in bad faith to be honest. You can say that he is a pop star without putting him on the same level as people with literally no integrity, and he can be a pop star while also having influences and styles in his music that are outside of that realm. He clearly has both.

And with being a pop star, of course he has an image. They all do. I much prefer the image of a male pop star visibly embracing queerness even if we are to assume that it is to some degree inauthentic, as opposed to the image of a male pop star who only knows Calvin Klein campaigns and black suits.

He is literally harmless, and the think pieces trying to convey otherwise are really quite ridiculous. :rip:

This is true. It works in both ways.

but i think that's the point the writer is making. everything about him is harmless & middle-of-the-road, yet he's presented as this boundary pushing, innovative artist all because he wears fem clothing

I think the thing is that the people saying this are coming from a typical GP mindset. Because in terms of the pop realm, he pretty much is that, particularly in comparison to his counterparts. But in a wider context? Of course not.

It just depends on how much exposure you have. If you only listen to the radio or music on the top Spotify playlists, then I can see how people might feel this way about him. It doesn’t make those people necessarily wrong, because he is really doing those things for the pop genre. Maybe others have done it better or more extreme before, but right now in 2022 it’s Harry Styles doing it.

All extremely obvious truths in this article. I suspect he’ll be persona non grata like JT in 3 years tops. People are learning to catch on to the phoniness much quicker than they used to. His brand is inauthentic mush. Art with no honest POV is just disposable trash

as much as i liked his last album this new one is just plain dull unfortunately

They didn't lie. He has absolutely nothing interesting to say as an artist and doesn't know how to say uninteresting things in an interesting way either. It's all vague, banal Instagram captions. Great productions, beautiful productions. It works as a 'mood' album to play in the background.

Couldn't have said it better :siptea:

He’s so boring and makes a perfect background music. That’s all.

Lorde apologists using any opportunity to claim 'Solar Power wasn't that bad!!!!!', or even try to gaslight people into thinking that it was good is... insane? That album has similar problems to this one but at least the production on HH is nice. Solar Power actually managed to out-pretentious Harry Styles, which is no mean feat, and for what?

Facts.
