UPROXX: No one would call Harry Styles subversive if he looked like Ed Sheeran

I agree somewhat. The same qualities the critics hate on Ed for they praise Harry for even though Ed is the more talented musician and has made some timeless classics.

Exactly. These critics are way too harsh on Ed just because he doesn't act like a drunken mess celebrity or indulges in multiple affairs.

I usually have respect for reviews and enjoy reading them, but I didn’t even have to read past this journalist’s tweet to see that he clearly had not listened to or understood (?) Harry’s music.

I could never imagine doing my job so unprepared and being so loud about it

But it's actually true? Not surprised that the basic white boy stans are coming here accusing people of being "pressed" :skull:

Everything "interesting" and "different" about him starts and ends with his clothes and his try-hard "omg I'm a man saying 'men are trash' persona", it's still straight guy crooner music at the end of the day.

There is no reason this new album is getting all that acclaim when Solar Power, an album that went for the same vibe but actually managed to pull it off, was criticized to shreds.

The only thing Lorde managed to pull off with Solar Power was to kill all the massive hype she had with the first single.

Annoying

He makes pop music and that's the standard he's held to. His music AND image are better than the likes of Bieber, Ed, Mendes, Puth, etc. And I say that as someone who never liked 1D or him. Are his androgynous looks manufactured to make him look cooler? Probably, that's pop music. And I prefer his possibly inauthentic queerness to no queerness at all.

yeah, but it's annoying to see him get all the praise while actual queer artists (Lil Nas X, Sam Smith, Olly Alexander) also dress daringly and failed to get the same hype

No one has ever called him subversive (funnily enough the word is never even used in the article). I don’t even like him but what’s wrong with making a feel good album? Too many essays, to little things of importance being said.

Can people leave ed alone for a bit? Its getting tiring

Harry's House is just not as good as FL.

Find it boring at first listen

He has absolutely no talent and he’s just as unfortunste looking as Ed Sheeran. What a miserable existence.

The absolute hatred yall have for Harry and Lis Nas X is really something else. :biblionny:

I mean... I don't agree Lil Nas failed to get the same hype. His album has 85 on MC, higher than Harry's House, with 4 publications giving him a perfect score. And not only is his music less critic friendly than the midtempo synth-pop Harry does but also, lbr, the album wasn't all that and neither is his writing.

Olly is also generally well received. Much less mainstream and only gets reviewed by UK critics who are much harsher but he hasn't tried to break through as a mainstream pop star

Sam Smith makes bad music so there's that.

There's obviously privilege in Harry's position. It's much easier for a white, attractive, already mainstream former teen heartthrob to brand himself as anything he wants. His choice to brand himself as a watered down Bowie with occasional winks that maybe he fucks men is probably calculated, but so is every branding choice. I wish more queer people were this successful but Harry succeeding as an imitation of them is a better look than Shawn Mendes's PR hetero relationship or Nick Jonas getting hype because he put his hand in his boxers. He... doesn't bother me.

That review is trash and kinda makes me want to give his album a try. Good job

fine line was better than this latest album IMO. harry seems like he’s trying too hard now, fine line has more

individuality… now he seems like he is trying too hard to be dIfFeReNt

Lorde apologists using any opportunity to claim 'Solar Power wasn't that bad!!!!!', or even try to gaslight people into thinking that it was good is... insane? That album has similar problems to this one but at least the production on HH is nice. Solar Power actually managed to out-pretentious Harry Styles, which is no mean feat, and for what?

Leave Harry alone, the way gays always go after male LGBT allies and fellow LGBT members but don't bother with actual homophobes

Ok so he’s a bad boyfriend? Falling still sounds like a Lewis Capaldi bonus track.

Okay and y’all dragged Lewis Capaldi for being ugly and making the same music, so what are we trying to do here? :skull:
