wren Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 Saw the movie in a packed theatre tonight and everyone seemed to enjoy it - lots of laughs throughout and claps at the end. Sure it wasn't perfect, but there weren't too many mistakes for a mainstream rom-com in my opinion. Definitely doing more good than the little bad for sure - and it's a movie straight people would enjoy as well (as I went with straight friends and they said it was awesome) - which is what the film is trying to do - just normalize gay love, which it does a pretty good job of.
Jynx Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 No one should be surprised that it bombed. Billy Eichner sucks. And now gay films will further be seen as unprofitable because of him and his awful film.

That's a bomb. AFAIK, rom-coms do better on streaming, since they are not a spectacle that you need to see on the big screen. While it is a faint hope, maybe it can still do well once it hits streaming services.
Bimbo Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 Billy is so ******* annoying and unfunny, of course he made himself the main character not watching this one.

Love, Simon underperformed as did Eternals which featured a gay character. I think gay movies tend to be marketed poorly nowadays though as well. They tend to always be marketed as so groundbreaking and not as funny or entertaining.
lovedaddy Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 it's bombing because of Billy, he's obnoxious, annoying and so unfunny next

Esp the first gay rom-com or w/e it was marketed as. Edited October 2, 2022 by Jynx
ALittleGauche Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 People who’ve seen it love it (including me). People who have no intention of seeing it are celebrating its poor box-office performance. Typical. The internet is a cesspool.

I’m sad to see this not perform well because it will further signal to major studios that LGBT+ cinema is ultimately niche and needs to be kept on streaming.

The clips I've seen of Billy on the Street were never funny and he was god awful during his seasons on AHS. I don't know why anyone thought people would rally to pay money to watch Billy. ALL HE DOES IS YELL. Did you see his Parks & Recs character? Downright ruined the show.

I mean Eternals was also panned by critics and audiences and none of the criticism was in regards to Phastos and his gay relationship. So I don't necessarily think its fair to use that as an example.
Terrielle Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 Billy is the typical obnoxious femme white gay so i'm not surprised. What a shame because I love gay movies.

Bey'Knight Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 9 hours ago, mystery said: That is nowhere close to true and a major blanket statement, in their year end report for 2020 Grindr reported to have almost 13 million users that were consisted of not just gay but bi, trans & other queer people. As we know that is not at all near the potential global number of gay people in the world. Do you think there are a billion gays in the world or something? We are very much a minority.
Gossip_Boy Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 Eternals was diabolical. It was doomed gay character or not. And I say this as someone who likes Marvel movies for the most part. Love, Simon wasn’t a blockbuster but it was a success. Its budget wasn’t big and it didn’t have some huge marketing campaign behind it either. Bros isn’t even going to break even at this point.
Gossip_Boy Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 11 minutes ago, Sharapov said: other rom coms are doing fine Bros isn’t doing well but comparing to a film starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney isn’t fair either. It was always going to be a lot more niche.
JanStan Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 The trailer completely turned me off. Do gays do anything else but party and hookup? The potential was there but the gay stereotypes ruined any desire for me to see it.
mystery Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 (edited) 25 minutes ago, Bey'Knight said: Do you think there are a billion gays in the world or something? We are very much a minority. Where did I say that? A common estimate of the percentage of gay population in the world is 3% which would already bring the number to 239 million people. It would for a country larger than Brazil (there was a thread about that recently if I am not mistaken). The actual number is probably much higher than 3% but we can't really truly know. Grindr's peak monthly userbase would compromise only 5% of all those people. So nowhere near the 70% of all gays that user was touting. Still a minority of course but a quite sizeable number nevertheless. Edited October 2, 2022 by mystery
Bad_vocal_technique Posted October 2, 2022 Posted October 2, 2022 At least it’s getting great reviews. May be it will become a streaming hit.
