I would feel silly and/or embarrassed to show up and accept a fake degree in front of a bunch of people who actually worked and paid for theirs. :jonny:

And I apply this to all celebs who do this stuff. I just don't understand honorary degrees.

You should feel ashamed of some many things in your life. Getting a honorary degree is not one of those things.

Its a doctorate of fine arts. She has routinely shown her depth of knowledge in the subject matter. She spent 15 years proving it and her knowledge. She has been routinely quizzed in interviews on her depth of knowledge over the years.

If they gave her a PHD in medicine, it would be an embarrassment and irresponsible. They are showing her experience and knowledge that is well documented is worthy of a degree.

Plus the students have an elite honor of ‘graduating’ with Taylor Swift and it boosts the NYU prestige to have her as a “graduate”.

Not her getting a doctorate degree through sheer artistic genius alone

She's at the absolute top of her profession so she deserves a doctorate :clap3:

Who deserves what honorary degree is wildly subjective, but the system's not going anywhere and the fact you're applying this virtuous standard to a private university which at the end of the day is a brand just seems really naive.

I'm not a stan or casual fan of hers recently, but I think a solid argument could be made of her deserving this for the fine arts doctorate, which is specifically what she's getting, as already mentioned. This isn't engineering, medicine or law. If you want to make an argument about the classical arts, I also think that's a really old-fashioned argument that doesn't touch on the conversations alone she's sparked within popular music from her press. There are literally two artists I think of first when it comes to discussions about royalties for not just established, but newer artists, as well as streaming - Radiohead and Taylor Swift.

Lots of coverage on this in an industry that's getting more brutal for those that aren't already an established touring presence. Then there's the court case with the DJ, etc during the #MeToo movement and much more. If you want to make the discussion about her being spoiled and not in the trenches so she could and can afford to make these arguments for just herself unlike a lot of poor newer artists who can't raise their voice I also don't think that's fair or productive. She could have shut up, and didn't. Same goes for the politics, late or not.

I mean, art is subjective and not definitive. I don’t see a problem with awarding her the degree since she has contributed far more to society with her art than the majority of those holding the degrees. Now if they gave her a STEM degree that would be laughable. :rip:

This is an incredibly privileged take. Some people are just as proficient as college students in their field but yet their experiences and professionalism should prevent them from getting a degree? Not everyone has the resources to go to school, not everyone has the same opportunities and that doesn’t mean they haven’t received the same amount of knowledge in the same fields if not even more. This is a way to articulate the validity of real world experience and how it can equate to standardized education which is an institution fraught with prejudice.
