She's been singing in Spanish since her debut album. "No Me Ames" (1999) went #1 on thr BB Latin Songs chart for 7 weeks, and was BB Latin's 3rd Most Succcessful Song of 1999. Her debut also had "Una Noche Mas" ("Waiting For Tonight" Spanish Version) that did really well on the Latin charts, and other Latin-influenced tracks like "Let's Get Loud". And she did not get fame due to her relationship with Marc Anthony lol. Rewind 30 years ago, and she was in her first big featured film that was in english/spanish called "Mi Familia" ("My Family"). Not too mention, she had her breakthrough role with "Selena". I don't think there was anyone that thought she wasn't Latina. Hell, it's why "Selena's" director felt she was overlooked by the Oscars. P.S. - J.Lo created a demo in Spanish right before she was signed to Sony. Tommy Mottolla told her she should sing in English instead. The more we all know. I didn’t said she get famous because of that relationship, I said she gained a lot of monumentum and fame for that relationship that cemented her as a Latina certified for the GP… if she wouldn’t be with Marc her career would have been pretty different -I don’t know if better or worse tho- and her recognition in Latin America wouldn’t be that huge like it’s today… Edited May 6, 2022 by Julia Fox

Cause I felt like she cemented herself in the states in 1999. "No Me Ames" was massive at the time, and is a Latin classic. "Let's Get Loud" & "Una Noche Mas" did extremely well too. Her other Spanish versions of her smash hits did really well too over the years and winning her various Latin awards. But I guess I can agree that Marc helped with her image during the Spanish album era. Oddly enough, she working on that album since 2004. I guess God's timing is always right. She's just the reason of the existence of Latina Magazine lol. 1996 @SavagePapi She was an actress at first and she was seen as a Latin Actress. GTFO with Marc Anthony, at that time she was married with Ojani and he's Cuban. Are you worried to see as a "the type of latin actress" ?

Literally I agree with everything that you has pointed lol i just said that she was first known musically as an English speaking singer and that’s not a bad thing because then she proved to have hits in Spanish to consider her a Latin pop girl lol but here in Chile during 2005-2011 was talked on the media just by her relationship with Marc and also her songs get a lot of radio play because of that… I don’t know if she would have released English songs it would have been that popular here and in LatAm in general so I think it was the right direction because LatAm is a very loyal market and not ageist with woman at all… she can have some cute radio plays and streaming/digital hits if she wants to tho

Who are you to deny someones heritage? I don't like Camilla but she is latina. Her mom is Cuban and her dad is Mexican. Christina's father is Ecuadorian who likely has indigenous grandparents. J.Lo is Puerto Rican like myself, most of us are a mixture of European, African and Taino indian. While her father does look white, her mother is obviously a woman of color. J.Lo looks mixed like most of us do.

I meant that they are not Latin pop artists, they barely had some songs on Spanish besides her heritage and also are more known by their English hits than the Spanish ones
Yudelkis Posted May 6, 2022 Posted May 6, 2022 Let's stop trying to make every light skin Latino, white ! When they are obviously not. No one is confusing JLo or her family for white people in New York City. They won't be treated like white people in any racist redneck town in the US. Calling Lopez or Cabello as white woman is insane.

I totally forgot about this one! Technically, it's her first record, but to be fair, this was not her debut single. It was just part of a soundtrack. It further proves the point though. She was pushed as a Latin crossover artist who sang in both English and Spanish; mostly in English with Latin influences. She even named her sound as "Latin-Soul".
Ger.vaz Posted May 6, 2022 Posted May 6, 2022 Jlo latina? She was born in NYC and doesn‘t even speak Spanish, Portuguese or any latin language. it is as if we say Shakira is the biggest middle east artist ever just because her last Name and roots

Same when you look at JLO’s grandparents. The amount of ignorant people in here ignorant about that in here and about Latino identity in general is astounding Anyway, the Top 5 in overall US success definitely include Christina Aguilera Jennifer Lopez Linda Ronstadt Gloria Estefan I’m not sure who the fifth choice would be. I don’t know if Shakira has enough overall US success to be included since her success is mainly in the Latin market. It could be between whoever is the most successful between Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez, and Camilla Cabello. I guess Mariah Carey, but she doesn’t seem to claim her Latina background much and she’s usually not included on these kinds of lists

She is a product of two 100% Puerto Rican parents. She also speaks Spanish. She isn't proficient; she's intermediate. She knows enough to understand and communicate. Countless interviews showcase that. Denying and/or discrediting her roots is extremely problematic by the way. And with your logic, Selena Quintanilla, Marc Anthony, Jenni Rivera, Romeo Santos (including Aventura), Nicky Jam, etc. are not Latinos either.

Protocol Posted May 6, 2022 Posted May 6, 2022 Selena Quintanilla is an icon but she never crossed over to the mainstream or to a global audience. Her highest-charting single ever only reached #22 on the Hot 100. Never charted anywhere outside of the Americas. It may sound weird but at this point after literally a decade of international hits Selena Gomez IS indeed bigger than her when it comes to success. Whether or not she will have a bigger legacy is up for debate. I think Selena G is underrated in that department, she kind of low key spearheaded a bunch of trends in the mid 2010s from whipser vocals ("Good for You") to minimalist bass-first pop ("Bad Liar"). In fact Billie's sound can be directly traced to those two singles.
Zaynsus Posted May 7, 2022 Posted May 7, 2022 Only counting the Latinas who released Latin music and have made an impact with it. Shakira Jennifer Lopez Thalia Gloria Estefan Paulina Rubio
