Can an artist be global without a UK #1 single or album?

Can an artist actually be global if they don’t have a #1 single and a #1 album in the UK? It’s the 2nd biggest music market!

Example?

If they manage to do it in France then yes ! :eli:

Avril doesn’t have a #1 single, so can she be global?

Britney has more #1 songs in the uk than US so this doesn’t apply to her:celestial4:

#1s don’t mean anything

Bionic went #1 with like the lowest sales ever for a #1 album and it’s only Silver (60,000)

she has 3 number #1 albums and would’ve had a 4th one had she released Love Sux the week before

yes just because your single didn't reach #1 doesn't mean it wasn't a hit

but you know this

Brittany Spears doesn't have a UK #1 album. She's local I'm afraid

Well of course. I mean you could go #2 there and be just fine. You could also not chart there at all but be #1 in every other major market and still be considered global.

Can a singer be considered a legend if their career only lasted 7 years?

Can ATRL stop with the Xtina/Britney threads for today? It's been enough :skull:

OT: yes, since UK is not the whole world :bam:

To be global I think if one Europe country doesn’t stan then another should. So France #1 or German #1 you don’t need them all. You certainly can’t be bigger then other artists with multiple #1 songs and albums though if you don’t have any song/album

I guess it all depends how you look at it: For example, Bionic was #1 in the UK in 2010 but only sold 60,000 copies vs let’s say Circus only peaked at #4 a year before and went platinum with over 300,000 copies sold.

Yes :deadbanana2:

#1 in the UK mean nothing. Look how irrelevant Little Mix is.

Nirvana had about 3 years of mainstream success before Kurt Cobain shot himself in the head

If their name isn't Aaliyah or Kurt Cobain, no :swan:

Yes if they end up making top 5 on the year-end INTERNATIONAL European Top 100 Albums chart which not everyone's fav was able to do :lakitu:

Yes, look at the Beatles, Rihanna (2005-2012), Nirvana,  Whitney (85-92), Mariah (90-97).

OT: Yes, the UK isn’t the whole world in the same way the USA isn’t or China isn’t etc.

I think a better question is if an artist can be global without cracking the world's 2nd biggest music market, Japan. Very few pop girls have.

Charli XCX - #1 album, #1 single

:clap3:

Little Mix - #1 album, five #1 singles

:clap3:

Billie Eilish - two #1 albums, #1 single

:clap3:

my GLOBAL faves!
