GoodGuyGoneGhetto Posted April 27, 2022 Posted April 27, 2022 Unfortunately, despite always being the primary highlight within R&B music, the genre doesn’t market/promote great singers anymore. Sonically, the sound has largely shifted towards an lo-fi, downtempo, pattern where the production is the main highlight (the lyrical content has shifted too) meanwhile the vocalists behind the song are incredibly basic. As much as I love them, SZA and Summer Walker could never do songs ala. “Don’t Let Go, The Boy Is Mine, Heartbreak Hotel” etc. justice today because they don’t possess the talent nor the range.

Thinking Of You Posted April 27, 2022 Posted April 27, 2022 Let’s be honest, the genre is in the pits right now. The big note, the excessive ad-libs and runs throughout the entire song, the bridge, and all that made the genre great, is all gone. Now you have these artists doing the bare minimum and because they have relatable lyrics, they are deemed as great R&B artists. It’s horrible.

Thinking Of You Posted April 27, 2022 Posted April 27, 2022 And another thing, we always want to complain now about other races dominating in our genres but back then, it was hard to do so because our musicality was unmatched. White artists literally couldn’t replicate our singing abilities, soulful-ness, or style. It was too hard to. Now with this vibe-y music, anybody can do that sh*t. The 12 year old white girl down the street could sound just like Summer Walker.

All the recent female collabs like B.S with Jhene Aiko & H.E.R or No Love with Summer Walker & SZA are lowkey & chill vibes.

Armani? Posted April 27, 2022 Posted April 27, 2022 Just now, Cheers said: HATER The OP meant vocals. That song isnt really a highlight of that. I guess Giveon did okay with that small verse he had but yeah...
