''Big Hoops (Bigger The Better)'' by Nelly Furtado turns 10 years old

*I wanted to post the thread last Saturday, April 16th (BH's release date) but then the weekend went by and I kinda forgot chile. Sorry for making the thread a few days after the anniversary.

On April 16th 2012, Nelly Furtado dropped ''Big Hoops'' as the lead single off her first english album in 6 years at the time 'The Sprit Indestructible' which came out later that year.

It peaked within the top 30 on the official charts of countries such as Belgium, Canada, The Netherlands and The UK. It didn't manage to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 unfortunately. It's certified Gold in Canada.

The song was definitely an underperformance as the launcher of Nelly's first Enlgish era since the mega successful 'Loose' which is Furtado's highest selling album so far.

PS : ''Big Hoops'' was produced and co-written by Rodney Jenkins aka Darkchild

I do not considered myself apart of Nelly's stanbase but she was done dirty with this single imo. The track is a whole bop and half ! I don't know if it flopped because it was too ahead of its time or if the promo rollout was sabotaged ? It deserved to be bigger in literally ever music market lol. I

She said it herself :

''The bigger the better'' :coffee:

First time hearing this song. I feel like I know the melody from somewhere, does it sample anything?

It gave us the bop that is 'Talk About' so it was alright in the end

Extremely good and ahead-of-the-curve song (all of which is unsurprising, considering the insane amount of talent this woman has).

Probably WFTN, Bucket List or Miracle would have been a better lead single to reintroduce her back in the English-speaking/English-friendly markets after her long absence.

If I remember correctly, btw, the label wanted to release WFTN as the lead single, but she declared she went against that because she specifically did not want the audience to think it was going to be dance record (or something like that).

The Queen could not care less about charts ❤️
if only she cared about releasing new music ?

It made a cute revival last year through this remake too

The remix is not my thing tbh, but I must admit it took all the best parts of the original :clap3:

Imagine if she had done a edm era instead of this.

This song was so ahead of her time and still is… it sounded like nothing on the radio ever -and still- and also that breakdown was so innovative!
I think the problem was the use of Illuminati on the MV and also the autotune was very criticized when it was released which is sad because a lot of pop stars used auto tune on her songs at that time and weren’t as shaded as Nelly, also she did a lot of promo and it didn’t payed off (BBMA's, Alan Carr)… I guess the public was not here for it and it’s sad

also she was criticized for being fat on the MV and that’s **** because she wasn’t fat… and then she lose a lot of weight when she released SI so it seems like it was a hard era for Nelly to face tbh

Its actually great, its just the verses and those baby whining vocals are very grating

The Spirit Indestructible had BOPS omg this, Parking Lot and Waiting For the Night :jonnycat:

The fact that a club mix of this went top 10 in the UK in 2021 :rip:

The video needed to be better...It was a choice but then again, its very Nelly. The song is a HUGE BOP. It was my most played song that year and she and I even had a little Twitter exchange about the single.

I feel reallllly old now though. WOW.

I wasn’t aware until now that a dance remix interpolating “Big Hoops” was released last year let alone that it was a top 10 hit in the UK.

Why wasn’t Nelly credited in the 2021 dance remix tho ? Her vocals are all over the remake ? I find it weird it isn’t phrased like that

Talk About - Rain Radio & DJ Craig Gorman ft. Nelly Furtado

PS : The track is not my cup of tea. I rarely enjoy DJ remixes and “Talk About” reaffirms my stance.

One of the most important songs ever released in my lifetime. Ameen.

She didn't care to be credited (she just wanted to get the coins hence her songwriting credit)

Oh wow go figures. But wouldn’t a featuring credit also give her coins ? I mean she is singing on the track. Or does an artist only get royalties from writing or co-writing a track ?

Also If I’m not mistaken, the songwriting credit is automatic since she wrote the OG track the remake samples from right ?

If I were her, I would have taken the credit cuz if the song blew up, I would have my name on the map again. It doesn’t cost anything to be credited in that scenario but she probably had  her reasons I guess.

Thanks for the insight btw !

Honestly I'm not too sure but I think the feature credit is just for name sake - I don't think it plays a role in royalties but I could be wrong. Like you said, the feature credit would be helpful to have her name back on the map again - it doesn't seem like she cares for that though and honestly prefers not to.

For example, JT being uncredited in BEP's "Where is the Love?" - I don't think he took a pay cut for that, it was just his preference because he didn't want to be overexposed
