But awarding Taylor with 3 and Adele with 2 AOTYs respectively was bs and they were favored over extremely important, great, and simply better outputs by African American artists such as Kendrick and Bey Neither Fearless nor folklore beat an extremely important, great, or better album by a black artist. 1989 fits your description, but given the academy’s preferences I’m not sure Lamar was even the runner-up. Alabama Shakes won all of their nominations except for AOTY, and they also got Best Album Engineering. They fit with the Arcade Fire / Beck wins that preceded this ceremony, too. It wouldn’t really surprise me if they were second in votes (which would still be a win for black artists, as they are fronted by Brittany Howard). Regardless, this was arguably the strongest AOTY lineup in Grammy history; all 5 nominees won their genre categories. I think it may be the only time that’s ever happened.
Cleanromantic Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 25 is the only album of that bunch that deserves nothing, yet people are angry at the acclaimed discography of miss swift getting awarded deservedly.
byzantium Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 (edited) The fact is, just because you are a MPG does not mean you deserve AOTY. Only the following MPGs were even in the running in the 21st century: Mariah in 2006 Amy Winehouse in 2007 Taylor in 2010, 2015, and 2021 Adele in 2012 and 2017 Billie in 2020 and 2022 Beyonce in 2015 and 2017 and Olivia in 2022. Rev8 Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 Women before them, paved the way u could really rarely win AOTY..and it was for mostly ballads (aka the only "quality music" women can give) now, women have won more..but it's still for boring music with the exception of Billie, who has actually shown something new and interesting
swissman Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 I think we had a thread about this recently but since ATRL switched I guess it's worth reiterating: they are all white, non-controversial artists their music is extremely popular but not (generally) overly simplistic/trendy/generic they are known to write the majority of their songs and the Grammys are biased towards artists who create in this way

The last Black woman to win was in 1999 (Lauryn Hill) and she was only the third Black woman ever after Whitney and Natalie (both of which were of the "ballad" type of music you mention). And in the last decade alone, white women have won double the total amount of AOTY wins that Black woman have in the entire Grammys history.

Oh, I am not even gonna start on That one Grammys have already been exposed for their Biased and Racist votings and selections! It's about time they started to go irrelevant (long overdue tbh) I like that artists like Eminem,Drake and Weeknd are sabotaging their asses more should join

Winning AOTY means thousands of actual musicians voted for your work as the best of the year, much better criteria for acclaim imo. Have you seen/read about some of the people who are Grammy voters? some of them make a lot of questionable choices at voting, vote for themselves, only choose the biggest albums and they just vote for their favorite genre or aren’t even musicians at all not saying AOTY isn’t a big deal, if definitely is, but I consider year end lists to be a better metric to determinate critical acclaim OT: they’re known as singer-songwriters and Grammys have always digged that, aside Billie, their music isn’t very polarizing, they’re a safe choice to reward, plus theyre liked by most people

brazil Posted April 18, 2022 Posted April 18, 2022 Tbh taylor always made very bland music, her winning it three times when her discography is characterized by teen outcast songs takes away from the grammys credibility. Meanwhile people keep coming for 25, an album that undoubtfully deserved AOTY
