fridayteenage Posted March 12, 2023 Posted March 12, 2023 12 years a slave is based on a memoir, and since i read it i know the movie is faithful to it. so that's an appalling take, but perhaps not surprising from you

This. I wonder why the hell she changed her campaign like that. She is supporting in that movie, no one would acuse her of category fraud. And truly give the best supporting actress performance of the year, she would sweep. Why Michelle, why?

And faithful adaptation =/= good movie Some critics identified 12 Years a Slave as an example of the white savior narrative in film.[103] Timothy Sneed said in U.S. News & World Report the year after the film was released, "Doubts still lingered about its ability to truly bring about a newfound racial consciousness among a national, mainstream audience ... The film also was a period piece that featured a happy ending ushered in by a 'white savior' in the form of Brad Pitt's character."[104] At The Guardian, black Canadian author Orville Lloyd Douglas said he would not be seeing 12 Years a Slave, explaining: "I'm convinced these black race films are created for a white, liberal film audience to engender white guilt and make them feel bad about themselves. Regardless of your race, these films are unlikely to teach you anything you don't already know."[105] A Black writer, Michael Arceneaux, wrote a rebuttal essay "We Don't Need To Get Over Slavery... Or Movies About Slavery". Arceneaux criticized Douglas for being ignorant and having an apathetic attitude towards black Americans and slavery.[106] I also think using screen time as a metric to determine category placement is flawed, but I do agree that Michelle is lead
fridayteenage Posted March 12, 2023 Posted March 12, 2023 (edited) i didn't say that faithfulness=quality. i said that if you choose to believe that solomon northup's life story is about white saviors and torture porn, that's on you Edited March 12, 2023 by fridayteenage
