Feanor Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 My personal Best Picture ranking: 1. Everything Everywhere All At Once 2. The Fabelmans 3. Women Talking 4. All Quiet On The Western Front 5. Top Gun Maverick 6. Elvis 7. Triangle of Sadness 8. The Banshees Of Inisherin 9. TÁR 10. Avatar: The Way Of Water
Haze Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 I kinda weep for film literacy when I see all those reviews and comments take Tár so literal, as if it is not clear from the outset that we're dealing with something unheimlich, or that a repressed reality is teetering at the edge of the film's literal story. It is not about cancel culture and it is not supposed to be realistic (Lydia calls herself father, she follows her love interest into an abandoned house yet the girl disappears, the constant noises, the fact that the trumpet player doesn't notice her when she's gathering to tackle her replacement ...) I feel like the film is misunderstood (especially if those voter ballots are true) Still rooting for Yeoh though. I think the praise for EEAAO is a bit overblown, even if I genuinely loved it, but she's such a good actress who should've been getting these kinds of films for ages. She was the star of crouching tiger, hidden dragon. I finally got around watching the banshees of inisherin yesterday, thought it was fantastic. I'd love for Collin to get the Oscar, an understated but devastating performance.

I personally prefer Tar and Everything Everywhere, but they are both too controversial. TGM is well liked by everyone and will be in the top 3 on a lot of ballots. There is going to be major backlash, but these are the same people that voted for Green Book so it shouldn’t be too surprising. I know EEAAO has won pretty much everything, but I don’t see a movie with dildos and butt plugs winning Best Picture. I would love to be proven wrong Even if EEAAO got upset, it's not gonna be to Top Gun. It's barely won anything at the guilds, lost PGA, got blanked at SAG outside of stunts, etc. BP upsets like Green Book, CODA, Moonlight, and Parasite all showed up in major ways at the guilds. They don't come out of nowhere.

The whole movie feels like it is happening in a limbo of sorts, the ghosts and weird things that appear in the background of some shots also add to that feeling.

Tedious and repetitive but necessary. 4/10 Banshees of Inisherin A flawless and subtle dark comedy. 9/10 Triangle of Sadness A blast. Really ingenious and fun. 8/10 The Fablemans Masterful and touching but predictable. 7.5/10 Everything, Everywhere, All At Once Masterpiece. Revolutionary. 10/10 All Quiet on the Western Front Gripping but dreary and conventional. 7/10 Avatar The Way of Water Immersive journey. Emotional and spiritual at times. 8/10 Tàr Fascinating but too long. 7,5/10 Elvis Feverish and pretty but without a soul. 6.5/10 1. Everything Everywhere All At Once 2. Banshees of Inisherin 3. Triangle of Sadness 4. Avatar The Way of Water 5. The Fablemans 6. Tàr 7. All Quiet on the Western Front 8. Top Gun Maverick 9. Elvis 10. Woman Talking

fridayteenage Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 ppl have been talking about how leto's been in bad movies after the year he won his oscar, but looking at the last several years his co-star mcconaughey's also been mostly in mediocrity despite his whole thing being the 'mcconaissance.'
wesleywalrus Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 When Halle says Michelle and finishes with Williams
Kylizzle Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 What's with the urge to downplay Austin. He was way better than melodramatic Brendan Fraser.

Leto's roles have been far worse than McConaughey's though, the fact Leto has received 4 Razzie nominations (2 wins back to back ) since his Oscar win speaks volumes.
Kylizzle Posted March 11, 2023 Posted March 11, 2023 Charlbi Dean Kriek > Dolly de Leon in Triangle of Sadness. Wish she could've gotten some posthumous recognition.
