Wonderland Posted April 13, 2022 Posted April 13, 2022 (edited) A Thread for all things New Zealand! Come on in and STAN for the best and most iconic country on the planet. Edited November 15 by Wonderland
Bubble Tea Posted November 6 Posted November 6 So fellow kiwis, how are we doing? Not that our govt is much better than USA's, but thank god we're about as far from USA's politics as anyone in the world could hope to be. @Wonderland could we please have a more generic title please . We should resurrect this chat. We need an Aotearoa safe space on here given the foolishness that country has demonstrated
Mordecai Posted November 7 Posted November 7 Hi my fellow kiwis!! Didn't realise we had a big presence on here Unfortunately most of America's politics are beyond our control, apart from their foreign policy I'm most worried about the effect another Trump presidency will have on the social and cultural landscape here (and the rest of the world too). Things will just continue to be nasty and divisive and will probably get worse It's definitely a wake up call to what's happening on our shores with things like gutting our health sector and the treaty principles bill. National has been horribly incompetent and it feels like they're making misstep after misstep

Was beginning to think we were a dying breed 1

National has been horribly incompetent and it feels like they're making misstep after misstep i'm also worried about that - it just resets the precedent and a horrible tone that you can be a democratically elected totalitarian. Trump would love nothing more in his time in office to further erode trust in the establishment and media, and that he is the only person you can/should trust. The first Trump reign already destabilized so much, so many awful right-wing leaders got elected and it became increasingly commonplace to just shamelessly lie and mislead the public. And yes this treaty principles bill is abhorrent. Can't STAND this current government my gawd. So useless.

Hobbes Posted November 7 Posted November 7 Quote 2 years later... OT: I'm not from NZ but my partner is from Christchurch. Hoping to visit someday and see the South Island!

Where are you based if you don't mind me asking? Did your partner leave NZ? Christchurch is an interesting place. It struggled a lot after the earthquakes but I have been very impressed with the progress made down there when I visited in recent years.

He left NZ about seven years ago. Yeah from what I've heard it sort of gave the city an opportunity to revitalise itself after the earthquakes. Silver linings I guess!
Wonderland Posted November 15 Author Posted November 15 Honestly so proud of Hana and how she made global waves with TPM and that haka yesterday 1

Who knows maybe it will inspire positive outcomes for Māori in the long run but for now it's really just making everyone angry and divided. Wellington will be interesting the next few days. I think everyone is getting flashbacks to that covid-era lot who took over parliament grounds for weeks, though surely less unruly.
