illia Posted March 9 Posted March 9 The streets are saying that the Dune Messiah movie was greenlit a few months ago
X~MoviePoP Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Dune messiah will probably be significantly different than the book
Gladiator Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Just saw it. It was so good. I want to go see it again. I'm re-reading and consuming Dune content.
truthteller Posted March 10 Posted March 10 (edited) The world building and character development in Part 1 finally came to fruition in Part 2 and this is AMAZING. they really packed a lot of plots in Part 2 and sometimes i wish they do let us breathe and tell us more about the OG story setting The star war of our generation I fear Edited March 10 by truthteller 3
Alex21kw Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Might be the first movie in years that I am actively planning to rewatch in cinemas, they did THAT. I do think this will have Avatar 2 legs (obviously not the same total), because people are just waiting to see this in imax or on big screens and imax is fully booked (at least in London) for a month from now
BNF91 Posted March 10 Posted March 10 (edited) $46M wknd estimate domestic (7th biggest March 2nd wknd of all-time) $81M wknd estimate OS $127M global 2nd wknd, $367M total after 10 days. Both Dom and OS should go up with actuals, just like last wknd. Edited March 10 by BNF91 3
Lovett Posted March 10 Posted March 10 F*ck this was incredible. I was captivated from start to finish. Genuinely couldn't fault a thing about it! 1

Still extremely strong, just -39% from last week true Fri. But will not get it to the $50M+ that many began to expect after such a red hot Mon-Thurs. Intense PLF demand actually propped up the weekday numbers which leads to a smaller Fri jump. But then Saturday jump and Sunday holds should be very impressive. Weekend should be between $43-45M with an outside chance at $46-47M. No matter how you slice it, strong numbers all around. $152-156M domestic by Sunday! $300M unlikely, $250-260M seems like where it will finish. Do you think losing imax to ghostbusters and Kong vs Godzilla will hurt it?
BNF91 Posted March 10 Posted March 10 (edited) 40 minutes ago, Elusive Chanteuse said: Do you think losing imax to ghostbusters and Kong vs Godzilla will hurt it? It seems like many places are actually foregoing the Ghostbusters IMAX release and keeping Dune, so I don't think the Ghostbusters weekend will hurt it much, just a bit. Ghostbusters is a total flop overseas and tracking isn't exactly blowing up for domestic presales. Godzilla might hurt it more tbh, especually overseas. Which is why it won't keep pace with Oppenheimer, which not only faced little competition but also enjoyed summer weekdays, AND didn't lose IMAX exclusivity for like a month and a half, then continuously returned to IMAX in some markets until the end of 2023. But April is gonna be a great month for stability, with literally nothing noteworthy releasing that would affect Dune at all at the box office. But it's alright because by the time Ghostbusters rolls around domestically, Dune will have banked $210M+ domestic with a decent bit still left in the tank. $250M seems quite likely at this point with $275M+ being possible. By the time Godzilla comes around to hit it overseas, Dune should be above $350M at least, making $400-450M the range for OS. Missing Russia is a real shame, that would have been another $30-40M (Dune Part One did 25M there). So endgoal looks like $650-700M WW Edited March 10 by BNF91 1
Gladiator Posted March 10 Posted March 10 (edited) I think I remember reading that Denis Villeneuve only plans on directing one more movie (so just covering the first two books by the end of it?). I wonder if the series will continue after that and also go into in the next generation, or if it will end with the conclusion of Paul’s storyline. Would be very interested to see God Emperor on big screen but I don’t know if they will take that risk with the cast they have now probably being a key reason for GP picking it up. Atreides come from Greece, Arkonnen from Sweden for example. 10k years before the Dune events there was a war between AI and human beings, not only cause AI took the control (like in Terminator) but also because some people started to believe machines were ruining the "human potential". To understand: humans desire to fly, for the way evolution works in years (well a lot of them) probably our evolution potential was to have wings. But we invented machines can fly so the evolution won't go in that direction anymore at this point. The sense of Dune as saga is human potential, especially for what is the mind, should be at its full realization and only at the point there isn't any mental barrier anymore the humanity is perfect and without problems. The war between machines and humans happened because a new religion formed based on a book called Orange Catholic Bible, which was a kinda of mix of christianity, islam and all the monotheistic religions (even during dune events the characters still read and believe in this bible). The point of this religion is the human potential is over everthing and the soul is the centre of the humans, so the machines can't be used. So it was basically a true holy war, for this is called Butlerian Jihad (Butlerian from the name of Serena Butler, the commander of the war against the technology). They won these wars so technology was banned. During these wars the Spice on Arrakis is discovered. As of result of these events 3 schools for the emporowment of human condition were created cause all of them use the spice to potentiate themselves: the school of Bene Gesserit (they control the expansion of the mind), the mentat school (to create humans can became calculators now calculators can't be used anymore) and the Spacing guild. The member of the Spacing guild are trained to use the spice to have visions of the future (but limitated to their purpose, not like the bene gesserit). So even for travels in the space tecnology is not used, but human beings are used and they know where to go because of their visions. Well actually the member of the Spacing guild even if humans have a strange form and seem not human anymore cause they are too constantly exposed to the spice. They don't show their face (at least not to normal people). at this point a kinda of feudal empire is created. There is an emperor (the first is the son of Serena Butler but it changes his surname to Corrino because of a battle called like this) and a feudal system with all the houses united in a league called Landsraad. What makes this system working (Corrino are the emperors for 10K years from the holy wars to the novel dune) is the emperor has the Saurdaker soldiers and no house can beat them alone and the fact everyone in this universe need the spice to travel and move. The emperor gave the control of the important planet Dune- Arrakis to every family for an assigned period, and this is important to make an equilibrium between them. Mentat, bene gesserit and spacing guild are indipendent forces as the CHOAM, an economic entity runs the extraction of the spice. So all the houses need mentat to have calculators, they respect bene gesserit because of their role on religions, the spacing guild to travel and the CHOAM to extract the spice. This means even if all of them should be indipendent in the reality in a game of intrigues for the power they can be used or corrupt in some way. The bene gesserit in particular (we can go back again to dune main meaning of the human potential at its highest level) believe they can create the supreme version of themselves. They can see the past and the future but only of their female ancestors (plus others limitations). There is a prophecy about a man is gonna see the future and the past of any human being before and after him, the Kwisatz Haderach (aka a sort of perfect Bene Gesserit). To make this happening (to the point you ask if the prophecy is true or you make a profecy true at any cost) from centuries they have controlled all the genetic matings of the houses with only one purpose : the creation of the Kwisatz Haderach. To make this possible ( i mean the fact they can force people to have the children they say they should make with a specific designed person) they need to go around the universe to "evangelize" the world (like basically happens with all the religions in the real world) so people can recognize him but most important all their actions can move in a certain direction to make the profecy happening. To make this possibile they say their Kwisatz Haderack is the one will make humanity a perfect condition to some people... his appeal on Fremen population for example is the bene gesserit for centuries created a cult about the fact this man will create the paradise on Arrakis (this means water, green and not the desert everywhere). according to the plans Lady Jessica was destined to became the mother of Kwisatz Haderach but.... with a daughter should have married Austin Butler character (the bene gesserit can decide the sex of their child once they are pregnant) but she disobeyed to their order to make a boy cause the Duke leto wanted that as first child. Hope it's a kinda of clear general scheme of the saga and its meaning On 3/8/2024 at 10:47 AM, TheFireLexus said: Grandmother, no? She was supposed to have a daughter who would marry Feyd-Rautha, and then the child from that union would be the Kwisatz Haderach. But Jessica decided to skip that step (because Leto wanted a son). Question: Why did Mother Mhiam instruct Lady Margot to breed with Rautha if she doesnt have the same bloodline as the planned female offspring of Jessica

But since Paul turned out to be alive, the plan became irrelevant Edited March 11 by illia 1
BNF91 Posted March 11 Posted March 11 (edited) Actuals are in and Dune gets a $2.1M jump from estimates. Just under $370M global total after 2nd wknd ($369.7M) $480-500M by end of 3rd wknd IMO Edited March 11 by BNF91 4
dawnettakins Posted March 12 Posted March 12 Saw it tonight in Dolby Cinema and WOW that was epic!! I was captivated from the start and it had me glued basically for all of if. There were a couple dull moments where I almost tuned out, but pretty hard to with that EPIC score and music literally the entire movie lmaoo. I definitely enjoyed this movie a lot more than the first. In fact, I could barely make it through the first as I got pretty bored with it and don't think I caught a lot of the plot. So, coming into this was different. I had to read a synopsis of the series after I got home from Part 2 tonight so that I got everything. I think now that I have bought into the storyline and find it engaging, I will have to revisit Part 1. Maybe it's because I didn't catch that one in theaters and just watched at home. But I think I want to anyway so I can go rewatch Part 2 now!

When Princess Irulan asked the Reverend Mother what if he’s still alive, she quickly shushed her and instructed her not to say anything to her father about this (so I assume they knew).

LIDDOATIN Posted March 12 Posted March 12 (edited) I have a question about the Spring Tears scene tho Spoiler why did Chani slap Paul? did they fool Chani and the others to make them believe that he came back from the dead or it's just Chani being angry for the risk Paul took? I believe it's the latter tho, no? Edited March 12 by LIDDOATIN
