Bang Up Posted May 10, 2022 Posted May 10, 2022 Finally finished this and it was such a cute show. I cringed at times, but not because of anything bad but because teens are cringy lol. I really like how this wasn't focused so heavily on sex like many LGBT-related teen shows these days are. Just two guys discovering themselves and falling in love.

That's what I think makes those moments work, the characters are commenting on how ridiculous some of their thoughts and words are like 'did I really just say this boy looks cuddly' as opposed to playing it straight which would be a less interesting choice. Does that make sense? Like I always got the feeling those moments were intentional. I've said some whack things when I was younger, mostly because I was so overtaken by adrenaline and emotion and have had my fair share of 'I can't believe I just said that' instances. Yes. The way Kit plays Nick is so nuanced and realistic. I really like how Nick isn't the stereotypical homophobic jock who falls in love with the one boy who makes him realize he's gay and suddenly he's an ally. It's clear Nick is an honest, genuine guy who just didn't know that he liked boys prior to liking a boy. That's how it often happens in real life. And then you have where he's not ready to come out to people not because he's afraid of what people will think about him or because he's ashamed, but because he's just so confused and not sure of how to handle the situation. I also really like the parts with his mom where she makes small comments that make him feel like she wants him to be straight, because that's super realistic too. Her comments were never said with malice, but just from the perspective of a mom who, by default, thought her son was straight. I audibly gasped when Olivia popped up on my screen for the first time. I was like, now how in the hell did y'all get her?!

emile20 Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 I saw the trailer for this a month before it dropped and knew it was going to be special. A friend recommended it to me the weekend it premiered and I watched the first 4 episodes at home alone, then waited to watch it with them for a whole week! Safe to say it was worth it. I loved every aspect of it. Especially the innocence and acting of the characters really felt genuine and special and age appropriate. Reminded me a lot of what growing up gay was like when I was a teenager and made me sad that I didn't have cute shows like this to watch with my friends at the time
publikcitizen Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Cute BTS video. I would’ve cried so hard on the last day of filming.

ATRL Moderator Bloo Posted May 11, 2022 ATRL Moderator Posted May 11, 2022 Do we think Netflix will adapt just the web comic series or is the Nick and Charlie novella also something Netflix would want to adapt for the series?
ineedboxinggloves Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 This show is so cute! I finished it all today. Entering my two cents. I’m currently a senior in high-school so I personally think this show was really spot on and I could go on and on about the things I resonated with. This just felt really genuine and made me cry several times but overall left me really happy. Going to rewatch this week with some friends

It’s possible! They could also adapt Solitaire if Tori becomes a more popular character. Basically Netflix could create a Heartstopper Cinematic Universe if they wanted to. I guess it would also depends on Alice as well.

It’s literally what I was wanting as a kid. 16 minutes ago, publikcitizen said: It’s possible! They could also adapt Solitaire if Tori becomes a more popular character. I think an HCU would be a tough sell (though I would not be opposed). But I think the novella being adapted into the current HS series has a good shot. Since the novel, from what I understand, takes place during the timeline of the web comic series anyway — since it’s focused on Nick and Charlie’s challenge of thinking of their future as Nick prepares for university while Charlie will still be at Durham.
Guest Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 This was a cute little series. I hate Tao, Elle deserves someone better. Stan Imogen.
BMURDA617 Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Just finished this. I am a mixed bag of emotions. Overjoyed and thrilled this exists, but also weirdly anxious and melancholy. I would’ve absolutely killed for a show like this when I was younger. I loved this so, so much. Tao tho, omg he needs a kick in the ass.

1DES Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Me realizing, after watching it for the millionth time, Nick was fancying Orlando Bloom when watching Pirates of the Caribbean.

I think Tao's character is super realistic too, though. He's protective over Charlie because of what he witnessed Charlie go through in years prior. His suspicions regarding Nick were obviously wrong, but I don't think they were misguided in the beginning. Also, he's a teenage who has one best friend who moved to another school and another best friend who is preoccupied with his new boyfriend. It's scary at that age to feel like people are leaving you behind and you're stuck in the same routine as always. I think him and Elle getting together might make him feel more at ease with his situation. I haven't read the comics so I don't know a whole lot about the characters, but is Tao on the spectrum? There are times when I felt like maybe he is, and that could explain his aversion and sometimes violence to the changes around him. Edited May 11, 2022 by Bang Up
Nido Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Just binge watched it and ugh I love how much serotonin I get from this. It's great to see that the West finally make a good & wholesome BL series

BlackoutZone Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Binged it, no regrets SO heartwarming I really like the very accurate representation, especially in details like the way LGBT teens talk/communicate. But in all honestly this was the most basic teenage romance and if it was just a bunch of straight friends and straight couples nobody would care much. Obvious that's mainly what makes it work, cause finally we got a series that doesn't just focus on portraying us as miserable, depressed, lost souls dealing with suicidal thoughts, abusive parents and bullying, but it all also shows how good positive LGBT representation is SO minimal in mainstream media...
