I also really identify with Charlie in the sense that he apologizes for everything and thinks he’s a burden :emofish:

I just know that Liability by Lorde is the song Charlie plays on loop.

Kizzy Edgell (Tara) is actually non-binary, not sure about their sexual orientation but I agree we shouldn’t speculate.

Kizzy plays Darcy, not Tara.

based on flixpatrol, overall days in top 10:

US - 3

days in top 10 shows:

US - 4

WW - 10

Doing better globally than the US definitely. Feels bigger but that's probably b/c I know lots of queer people.

I personally think some people conflate earnest and escapism with cheesiness. The performances throughout the show are consistent, the chemistry is palpable, the editing is fluid, the direction is straightforward but never boring, and the script is lighthearted with the occasional misstep typically involving side characters (the bullies). It's not that I think every critique of this show is invalid, but I do think some people just don't appreciate escapism which in my opinion isn't a justifiable critique on the show considering it makes use of the hallmarks of that genre masterfully.

Perhaps I just prefer something realistic and not too cliche :cm:

The show had the most realistic and authentic casts. I give them that :cm:

Other than that, it's just another cliche rom com like JLo's movies :rip:

That's what I meant, some people just don't enjoy escapism and prefer realism. But I think using that as a critique of the show when its making use of its genres iconographies quite well is misguided. That's all, no hate

I don’t see what’s so unrealistic about it? Two people having a crush and then dating at the end? That literally happens in everyday life. I’ve had that happen before. I’m not quite so sure why this story is so stunningly unrealistic. :rip: Is it fantastical and idealized? Sure. But the basic premise is pretty simple and fully realistic, even if it’s not everyone’s experience (which is true for literally any piece of media).

I feel like a lot of gay guys carry so much trauma and bad dating experiences that when they watch this show, they feel upset about how life could have been so different if they were teens now, and some people just flat out reject the idea of true love being possible. I think this will start a healing process for some people, though. And, I've seen some new people on Tinder bcuz of this show, saying so in their bios, so this has given hope for some. The biggest problem in gay dating has been that the dating pool is so limited, especially outside of the big cities. So if that pool gets bigger, that's gonna help with many things.

The way this show is taking over my life :rip: I rewatched the first two episodes today for the 3rd time pls. Its also all over my Instagram/Facebook/Twitter/Youtube feeds and FYP. Not complaining tho :heart2:

I remember watching the trailer and thinking it looked cute, never would have guessed that it would become this huge tbh :rip:

Yall want your gay trauma/death/straight rejection/AIDS shows for it to be realistic? Cuz there's plenty of those :toofunny2:

I agree. That’s the only explanation that makes sense for why people allege the series is unrealistic. The idea of two teens crushing on each other and falling in love shouldn’t be unrealistic. It happens quite often. But it’s obviously more difficult for LGBTQ youth. But that changes with time and positive representation can only move that forward.

Spoiler

Starting Chapter 7 of the webcomics. And I hope they don't do a whole two season about Charlie's ED. Even though they sorta been low key foreshadowing it in season 1.

i've somehow been flooded with stuff abt this show even tho i dont follow a single person who watches, so i decided to give the webcomic a read since it's v bitesized, finished it in like 4-5 hours

it does FEEL super fantastical/fairy tale-ish, like literally the french vanilla fantasy of a new boy going in ur class, hopelessly falling for him even tho ur sure he's straight, the moments of touch like fingers grazing each other/falling on each other, the crush beating up a homophobe

:rip: like it was super corny and i was kinda kii'ing @ it more than being super emotionally into it ? it def reads like BL written by a cis woman in that way ig kdfj

BUT, i also don't HATE it, charlie and nick are adorable, and i love the introduction of certain elements like charlies mental health + ed, nick's struggle when it comes to helping him, the different dynamics in how their individual circles feel abt their relationship...the friend group is also sweet even tho the way they talk is kinda annoying :rip: still, v happy that the baby lgbts will have a rlly fluffy and sweet story like this in the zeitgeist :jonny6:

also (end of series spoilers??):

its so so SO heartwarming to know that nick and charlie are in it for the long haul, and that there won't be a tragic breakup or anything when the main plot actually ends
:'(

i'm not super sure i wanna watch the series tho, i fear it might come off as TOO cheesy compared to the comic :deadbanana2:but i WILL be keeping up w the comic!! :cm:

Joe looked so good at the BAFTA award yesterday :smitten:

I binged this in one day and absolutely loved it. The acting is so good (for the most part) and Nic and Charlie were so well cast - they look exactly like their counterparts straight out of the graphic novels.

I think what I like the most is that it touches upon some pretty heavy themes (homophobia, identity, etc) but it still retains a lightness and never feels too 'heavy' - if that makes sense? I guess I'm trying to say it's very accessible for young people and I can only look back wistfully and think how much I needed a show like this when I was in school and dealing with my sexuality and bullying. :weeps:

I think I find it extra relatable because I live in the UK (where the show is set), and some of the scenes in the school where Charlie was being bullied/experiencing homophobia felt very realistic and represented the sort of everyday homophobia that happens in high schools here. I did cackle at the scene when Imogen was like "I'm not homophobic, I'm an ally"... if I had a penny for every time someone has said that to me :priceless:
