Venus was awarded a WC for the AO

The wild card should have been awarded to a younger player. Venus has no business being out there anymore and I think she's hurting her legacy with each first round loss. About half of her career now is in irrelevance. Kimiko Date Krumm was more competitive at the end of her career than Venus is right now.

Uh no?? what is this? she's wasting a WC for a player that'd need it much more

She’s more than earned the right to a wildcard. No one complains about Andy Murray taking wildcard after wildcard even though he’s been flopping since his comeback and has had a fraction of Venus’s success overall. Maria Sharapova got wildcard after wildcard after coming back from suspension for doping. Kim Clijsters got wildcards for her half-baked comeback.

It's not a charity. The other girls can still qualify or receive one of the other WCs if they're good enough.

It's a no-brainer for any tournament organiser to grant a WC to the active player with the most Grand Slam titles, and more GS titles than the top 15 combined.

i mean, people will show up to see venus, not whatever nobody she booted

Where are all the people complaining that he stole a wildcard from a player that really needs it?! :coffee2:

he came back from an injury last year and has been improving more and more against venus who is just 100% useless.

he's ranked #102, venus aint even top 1000

Well I would hope he's ranked higher, since he has played 19 tournaments since March, as opposed to Venus who has only played 4 tournaments in the past year.

She was out of the tour for an entire year so completely lost her ranking, while Thiem was away for less than a year and was already ranked quite high when he returned. So the snarky top 1000 comments don't really work here (plus there's the fact that Venus actually is in the top 1000 currently, so you're both incorrect :lakitu:).

Thiem has also taken many Wild Cards, and is still taking them now. It took 8 tournaments for him to register his first win, which would never have happened if all tournament organisers denied him a Wild Card for the same reasons that you both think Venus should be denied one. It's valid for someone to ask why neither of you complained about Thiem's Wild Cards, given all these facts.

neither of them should've gotten a WC, dominic had enough time to gather ranking pts and venus is barely staying in top 1000 (that's on her how many tourneys she's playing)

Venus has won 1 match out of the last 11 :deadbanana4: the comparisons to thiem who came back from a hard injury are STUPID. enough.

Venus’s current ranking doesn’t change the fact that she is currently the most successful player on tour with the most Grand Slams, Olympic Medals, overall titles, and has actually been ranked #1. Not to mention that Venus is a household name that will draw attendance to the tournament and bring attention to tennis in general, which is something the sport sorely needs after losing two of its biggest names last year. Also, Venus was out most of last year because of an injury, just like Thiem.

Obviously you know nothing about tennis if you don’t understand why a legend of the sport would be given a wildcard over a “deserving” player ranked outside the top 100 that 99% of people have probably never heard of.

Where was this energy for “deserving” players getting wildcards when Maria Sharapova got wildcards galore after coming back from cheating? :coffee2:

I don't care that Venus is getting wc's (as she should), but is this a joke? Maria got way more backlash than Venus, even from players (and tournies, remember the French Open mess? where she was literally a former 2x champ) :rip:

Maria was also like a decade younger than Venus, there was still more interest (or curiosity)/"butts in seats" for her (even if let's not pretend like any of these girls were/are able to pack any venue internationally) and she did manage to climb the rankings/win more matches than Venus currently for argument's sake

I was talking about on here where most people had no qualms with her getting wildcards.

yes "obviously" we know nothing about tennis :toofunny3: it's common sense she'd get in more people than a aussie teenager, the point is, she's barely hanging in top 1000, won 1 out of her last 11 matches and since 2018, she's gone through the 2nd round on a GS twice... :rip:

full disclosure, i don't think dominic should get one either, he's been back for a while now but oh well

then you obviously weren't here bc she was dragged to the pits of hell and back.

Obviously Venus should get a WC, so does Thiem, so did Sharapova. Young players have their whole careers ahead of them to get WCs or get in the draw on their own. WCs are not really a meritocracy, that's what qualifying are for.

Pointless discussion.

So what? A bad year or two invalidates 3 decades of world class tennis? You’re talking about the lowest ranked woman to ever win Wimbledon; ranking isn’t everything. Why is someone who has yet to prove themselves more entitled to a free pass than someone who has proved themselves multiple times over? People are so quick to shove older players out the door and then cry when they actually retire.

There were definitely more people on here cheering for Sharapova’s return than there were decrying it.

She injured herself badly in that match and still finished, unlike these young players that you are advocating for who retire if they have a hangnail. :toofunny3:

:bibliahh:It's just sad how she keeps tarnishing her legacy. Watch her lose 6-0 6-2 against some mug like Trevisan now
