This was nowhere near peak tennis. This competition was beginning to weaken out at this point. Grand slam champions like Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport, and Mary Pierce had retired a few years prior to this, and I believe Kim Clijsters was in the beginning of her hiatus (pregnancy).

For me, the era of peak tennis in the women’s game was the early 90s (1990-1992/93), before Monica Seles got stabbed and Capriati took a hiatus. At this time, we had Steffi Graf near her peak, with Seles and Capriati coming up fast, and Martina Navratilova still performing at a high level. (We saw how the women’s game totally went into the crappers in 1994 without Seles and Capriati.)

i don't disagree, graf/seles/capriati/navratilova were def somewhere else but for me, this is when i started discovering tennis, nostalgia aside, it gave me chills
