This competition was beginning to weaken out at this point. Grand slam champions like Jennifer Capriati, Lindsay Davenport, and Mary Pierce had retired a few years prior to this, and I believe Kim Clijsters was in the beginning of her hiatus (pregnancy). For me, the era of peak tennis in the women’s game was the early 90s (1990-1992/93), before Monica Seles got stabbed and Capriati took a hiatus. At this time, we had Steffi Graf near her peak, with Seles and Capriati coming up fast, and Martina Navratilova still performing at a high level.
