BeachRat Posted October 27, 2022 Posted October 27, 2022 (edited) okay so i couldn't wait. i watched BARBARIAN yesterday. REVIEW: BOY, OH BOY. i'm still in...some kind of shock? surprise? awe? confusion? really not sure how i feel about this. i -intentionally- never watched the trailer for this one. so i walked in without knowing nothing - no pun intended-. the first act of the movie gave me serious anxiety. i just KNEW that something was coming, obvs, but i thought it had to do with Keith. and the obvious reveal that he was up to something. when the twist - reveal finally came, i was a bit disappointed. i mean that's it? after ALL that i have read in here and the -still superior- Malignant comparisons, i was expecting something more..so yeah i agree that it was overhyped. BUT, it's definitely worth it. i just feel like it's some kind of mix of random/short ideas. i think even the director said so. or, actually a good starting point idea - that didn't know where to go in order to be a full movie, maybe. i am not gonna lie, i was scared. that movie actually managed to SCARE me. which for some is enough. and they can stop reading here. isn't the thing that makes a successful horror movie at the end of the day the ability to actually ******* scare you? the claustrophobic-something-in-the-shadows feeling was MAJOR. it's a classic that can't go wrong if executed well. and it was executed well, at least from a directors/cinematographers point of view, that movie was a masterpiece. to go back and think of the open door in the first night at the house when the movie is over will LITERALLY make you **** your pants. the third act was also very innovative and pleasant directing-wise. but plot wise? in general? idk... maybe my problem is that i was expecting some kind of sophisticated - elevated horror kind of ending/twist, which you DO NOT get (maybe only some kind of twisted commentary on gentrification? lol), while all this movie was trying to do is go down the monster / classic old time thriller horror trope merging it with unexpected twists and turns, that are so random and out of nowhere that you can't really not see them as unexpected, in the end. kinda fresh? maybe. never been done before out of this world? no. At last, the really disturbing and chilling thing is that it leaves a lot to the imagination, about the murders, the tapes, all the things that happened in the past and what's going down -again no pun intended- all the time. the movie wastes no time -sometimes to it's disadvantage- to explain/analyse things a lot. in general a success. but not the movie of the year. not better (maybe equal) than movies like Pearl (still THE No.1), Crimes Of The Future, Nope, Bodies Bodies Bodies etc. (MEN can still CHOKE, worst movie ever, i wanna throw up even thinking about it x) but it's up there with them. Uncatena Posted October 27, 2022 Posted October 27, 2022 Rewatching BBB in a theater this weekend because it’s finally getting a release here. will have to endure the horrible dubbing of the Gen Z lingo but it will be worth it.

A couple gems and some duds and very low budget. -Terrifier 2 was amazing and I definitely recommend. It's bringing life back into the slasher genre but the violence is extreme so it's not for everyone. Personally though it's in my top 3 best horror movies of the year. Art The Clown is making his place in iconic horror movie killers for sure. -Barbarian is the best horror movie of the year! Great acting and genuinely has some scary af moments. Definitely recommend
Jay L Posted October 28, 2022 Posted October 28, 2022 Also I finally watched Bodies Bodies Bodies and I really enjoyed that Love a good horror whodunit
SmashingMiley Posted October 28, 2022 Posted October 28, 2022 NOPE is very good! Jordan Peele never misses Not as good as Get Out but I certainly enjoyed it more than Us. 8/10. There are some genuinely creepy and chilling moments in the vein of cosmic horror/Lovecraftian way. Keke Palmer is a star. A little bit slow at parts but when it picked up it’s relentless. The review bomb on IMDB tho. I understand it’s not for everyone because it’s a blend of genres rather than a strictly scary film but some people were acting like it’s the worst thing ever which is obv not true
