Uncatena Posted September 21 Posted September 21 5 hours ago, Reverse Warholian said: My one tiny gripe with The Subs10/10nce: Reveal hidden contents At times it doesn't trust the audience to remember the really simple "rules" and finds every way it can to ramrod them down your throat (ex. Several instances of big bold cards of type flashing on the screen reminding you what the rules are as they're being abused, flashbacks during the diner and NYE scenes, etc) The soundtrack btw is also MINT. I've been streaming it with my baby all day instead of that godawful Katy Perry alberm. @SitarHero @Walk_Away21 @TalkThatRihanna @lillavend3r Spoiler those in-shot flashbacks are a clear tribute to the movies that inspired this imo and the title cards are actually really important imo, I have a whole theory about the use of graphic design (the custom font, the logo, the voice over) in this movie but I need to gather my thoughts since im STILL digesting this opus. but there were a few moments of editing were I was like "yeah, we know" absolutely agree on the soundtrack, it SLAPS. the siren-esque sound is already iconic 1

Jack! Posted September 23 Posted September 23 Never Let Go was probably my least favourite watch of the year. So all over the place with the story and no real answers in the end when at the baseline of the movie sat a potentially powerful story if they had simplified it. They should have completely ripped any supernatural/other-worldly evil elements out of it. A story of how debilitating mental health can be that it consumed a woman to believe she was living in an apocalyptic world and how that's bled into the mind of her on children/child would have been sufficient enough. The ending was benign. I also found the pacing a bit boring in spite of changes I think they could have made to the story. A shoot and a miss, I guess.
Reverse Warholian Posted September 23 Posted September 23 (edited) The SubSTANce holding steady at a remarkable 4.1 on Letterboxd. Meanwhile, @The Witch's In A Violent NaTURD continues to plummet faster than a Kitty Perra album. Edited September 23 by Reverse Warholian 5

rooby.booby Posted September 24 Posted September 24 Excited to the The Substance since everyone is prasing it. ---- Watched 2 movies last night: Lovely Dark And Deep - It had the story, it had the potentional to be great it was just mid. Amelia's Chlidren - now this was a mess and a half. The actor that played the brothers tho, olá pai! 🤭
Lemon Posted September 24 Posted September 24 I was making a choice between Strange Darling and The Substance to watch this past weekend and have opted for Strange Darling. I have watched this movie already - it was Stalker (from) last year and while much less dynamic and less twisted, still more airtight execution of, essentially, the same core premise. Reverse mechanic of the plot and characters was not a shocker, but I am still glad idea of who are usually serial killers had been entertained.
killer_rose Posted September 24 Posted September 24 The SubSTANce truly serving #1 Horror of the year. Obesity (Oddity), In A Violent NaTURD and TRASH (Trap) serving 99-OUT on the charts. 1
Johnny Cash Posted September 25 Posted September 25 Not the gays ruining The SUBstance for me with all that unnecessary hype The ending was serving this 1
rooby.booby Posted September 25 Posted September 25 Frogman was a mess, so boring and you have like 10-15 minutes of action at the end and even that action is mediocre. The idea was there. Spoiler Would have loved for them to expend more on the cult part. It's a no from me. The ending was was good tho, those frog sounds slayed.
Uncatena Posted September 25 Posted September 25 the rest of the movies this year don't even have to try anymore, The Substance ate everything up and is already shaping up to be a cult classique 1
sweetsexysavage Posted September 29 Posted September 29 How did you find the current Speak No Evil version compared to the original?
The Witch Posted September 29 Posted September 29 (edited) The SubSTANce is the best of the 20s i fear. Can't believe Demi Moore ended @Reverse Warholian's Maika Monroe and my fave Mia Goth with ease. So perfect omg Edited September 29 by The Witch 1
judasmonster Posted September 30 Posted September 30 saw Oddity and it was actually really good had me tense all the way through 3

I still appreciate that they changed the third act because otherwise it wouldn't have been more than a lesser carbon copy. If you do want to see both, watching the remake first is the right choice imo because that way it will be less disappointing and actually quite alright for what it is. I mostly prefer watching the original non-american movies, but maybe I'll watch the remake first, as you recommended
Dad Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Just watched the substance and WOW, i think it might be my favourite horror movie of all time. I was not expecting it to be so good, felt like an episode of black mirror but in movie form. 10/10
Have A Break Posted October 1 Posted October 1 If you haven't watched Strange Darling yet-- WATCH IT NOW! The movie is incredible and Willa Fitzgerald is a gem.

Did you notice behavioral changes when you compare the different couples to each other? Spoiler The original quite captured the nice and polite nature of the danish couple, as far as I remember.
Dad Posted October 1 Posted October 1 Watched Speak No Evil and it was okay, maybe a 6 or 7 out of 10.The first 90 minutes or so dragged a bit, they could have shortened that

Hide contents The original quite captured the nice and polite nature of the danish couple, as far as I remember. Spoiler I really disliked that they added the part where the hosts empty the guests' bank account because that gave them the graspable and kind of boring motive of financial gain which immediately made them so much less scary to me (in the original they remain equally scary before and after the mask off moment). At that point the remake became more like one of those home invasion survival popcorn flicks (which it did decently well, but it wasn't anything special) instead of continuing to focus on the psychological aspect of the guest/host dynamic which was really the interesting idea about the movie to begin with. 1
Uncatena Posted October 2 Posted October 2 anyone else doing something like spooktober? im trying to watch 31 horror films this month, mostly ones I haven't seen. was busy yesterday so today im watching Strange Darling and Cuckoo.
Jay L Posted October 2 Posted October 2 All this hype for The Substance maybe I'll go see it tomorrow
