Is MHA actually good enough to binge?

I'd like to give it a try but I'm so tired of the power-scaling trope in action animes ala Naruto, DBZ, etc. A villain appears -> become more powerful -> defeat villain -> new more powerful villain appears -> become more powerful -> defeat villain -> new more powerful villain appears -> and so on so forth.

When Tokyo Ghoul came around, I thought it'd be a more of an insight of how a guy would deal with becoming a Ghoul. But nope, Ghoul Powers activate! Who cares about a deep introspection on transforming into a monster when we have BLOOD POWER BATTLES!.....ugh...:gaycat6:

Literally 98% of battle shonens are like that nnnn. MHA is a battle shonen too so yeah

But it's not bad. It would be great for a binge, but if you're expecting some deep insights and genre-breaking introspections ala Death Note, then it's not for you :gaycat6:

The author DOES try sometimes by raising the topic of villains and how it feels to be a villain, why people become villains, or the topics of racism etc, but it never came off naturally to me, because... it's still a shonen manga targeting teenage boys

Not discrediting ALL shonen mangas though :cm:

sakamoto days was kinda interesting and different for like one volume, sort of a way of the househusband but with more action.

but the next 19 volumes are mostly a typical nonstop action series.

5 volumes into vagabond, i'm wondering when the story/character development starts having priority over endless fighting.

So I started watching One Piece for the first time, and have watched the first 50 episodes. It's an okay anime I guess, but I have a hard time understanding how this series is supposed to rival Naruto in way, and even be better than Naruto according to One Piece fans

So far:

The first 50 episodes of Naruto  >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The first 50 episodes of One Piece

Posted

One Piece takes the time to build its world and develop the Straw Hat Crew to where people are truly connected and attached.

Naruto is fun and exciting but becomes another case of wasted potential in the genre. On the other hand One Piece only gets better with each major arc (not including the diabolical pacing). I say this as someone who enjoyed Naruto for what it was and has taken an indefinite hiatus on One Piece (because I fell too far behind after Dressarosa arc). So not exactly a One Piece glazer

I 100% recommend to watch 'One Piece', each arc is really unique, has great new characters and develops in an excellent way the world and history of One Piece. Queen Robin and King Brook are my favorites, but I love all the Mugiwaras 💜

Whew ok the finale episode of Uzumaki was pretty good. I was VERY pleasantly surprised with the post-credits alternate ending. It added a layer to the stories 'lore' that the original ending didn't have. I approve! :chick2:

Rankings: Ep1 -> E4 -> -> Ep3 -> -> -> A Xanax -> -> -> Ep2 (followed by another Xanax).

Every single time I rewatch Death Note I forgot about the theme song change from Ep. 20 onwards - throws me off every time. :deadbanana:

Naruto is better than One Piece only at pacing and animation (pre-Wano)

As for everything else, One Piece clears :cm:

I agree. Ep 2 really needs to be burned though.

The way those men ate that man who just turned into a snail by crawling into the shell was so rough though. A mess. :rip:

finished the episode and it was just incredible... whoa:jonny:

they are taking so many liberties animation-wise and every single one of them is paying off because there's passion and love behind the project :jonny5:

I know people won't agree but I honestly think the adaptation might be superior than the source material. :jonny5:

Yeah yeah yeah, ahhhhh I'm so happy to be excited about a series again.

Slow burn/yearn, found family, an amazing female lead, interesting characters and backstories coming.  A fun style and sense of humor leading into deep heartfelt emotions. This is very clearly shonen history in the making. JJK you are BONES

finished the first 10 volumes of kaiju. while the first few are more interesting (as is often the case for shounen), there is still a degree of humor and character development so far, which is more than I can say for certain other series.

dorohedoro: mmm, the early part is quite nice. when the lead goes MIA and the main female character starts getting weird, things take a turn for the worse. and then the explanation behind everything is very convoluted culminating in an underwhelming climax. still decent overall.

Just found out the Editior for DanDanDans's manga is forced him to read over 100 shojos to make sure he didn't **** up the emotional messages and romance elements. No wonder it's hitting the right beats from the start

ugh I need to watch Look Back asap. I've read the one-shot like two or three weeks ago and it was so beautiful. can't wait to see how it translates to animated form.

finished slam dunk. maybe it's cuz I read haikyuu first, but it feels like outside of basketball practically the only character with any development or depth is the lead. it's still occasionally exciting so i'd put it over vagabond. of 10 series with 90%+ on myanimelist:

#1 Fullmetal Alchemist

#2 Monster

#3 One Piece

Berserk

Punpun

Steel Ball Run

Vinland Saga

Slam Dunk

Grand Blue

Vagabond
