I also hope Mushroom Face would stop appearing on my screen. --- Cultural Note: One thing to note about Khun Chai is that the names of characters and deities mentioned (Zhu Yingtai, Bai Shuzhen, Guanyin, Cai Xiaotong, Tian, Yang) are transliterated in Mandarin, which is the native tongue in the northern provinces and Beijing. The migrants who settled from China in different parts of Southeast Asia tend to speak southern languages and dialects (Cantonese, southern Min, Fuchow, Hainanese, Hakka etc) which sound 80% different. Thus the names of the characters mentioned would have been totally different in pronunciation. (The only similarity shared is that in formal writing, the same characters exist and can be pronounced differently, depending on the region.) Another thing to note is that, since the association heads themselves migrated from China to Siam a few decades prior to migrating, they probably would have been conversing in a mix of Thai (with locals) and that Chinese language/dialect (amongst themselves). Genius1111 Posted March 11, 2023 Share Posted March 11, 2023 Among the people in GMM, the ones who can speak fluent Mandarin that I know of are Godji (who majored in Chinese as an undergrad) and Phuwin. Most of the other actors probably only can say basic stuff like their name, ni hao (how are you, or literally "you good), da jia hao (hello everyone, or literally "everybody good") and wo ai ni (I love you, which Pond learnt in Never Let Me Go, and which Pond later used to educate Nanon in Dirty Laundry) There was an interview in Taiwan where TayNew and Earth were present and they were interviewed by some Taiwanese BL actors (before the pandemic started.) Newwie probably has learned a fair bit, but he probably isn't confident enough to have a conversation in Mandarin in public. Tay Tawan said he tried to learn when he was 12 but he gave up.
