Covid Boosters Aren't Reaching People Who Want Them (msn.com)

Quote

The federal government is no longer paying for Covid-19 vaccines, after the public-health emergency ended in May. Payment for the shots has been taken over by insurance companies. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention set up a program for the uninsured to get free shots at some health departments, centers and pharmacies including CVS and Walgreens.

Most insurers are required to pay for the updated Covid-19 vaccines, which cost more than $120 without coverage. But some only fully cover them through in-network providers and pharmacies. Other insurers haven’t updated their plans yet to cover the shots for people who seek them out, health-policy experts said.

“It’s supposed to be immediate,” said Sabrina Corlette, co-director of the Center on Health Insurance Reforms at Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy. People should call their insurance companies if they run into problems or are asked to pay, she said. “Don’t pay anything without checking first.”

COVID-19 rampant among musicians despite “end of the pandemic” - World Socialist Web Site (wsws.org)

Quote

There are a couple of notable exceptions to the prevailing trends among artists getting sick and holding unsafe concerts. Indie rock group Deerhoof has been outspoken against the efforts to normalize the pandemic, and requests that their fans wear masks at all of their concerts. Contrary to the anti-masking propaganda, the overwhelming majority happily do so to safely see the artists perform. Similarly, indie rock artist The Anchoress has advocated for masking and clean air at her concerts, with strong support from her fans.

:clap3:

It's kinda funny how I hang out on ATRL so often but I don't really recall that many musicians cancelling due to COVID-related reasons. I only knew about the Metallica one.

I also wonder whether socialists and progressives in the West are more likely to continue wearing masks and not treat the pandemic as over. The writer of this article gives me the impression that socialists are more likely to reject the call by governments to "go back to normal" and continue mask wearing and observe other good health protocols. I really doubt so.

Pfizer slashes 2023 revenue forecast on lower COVID sales; will cut expenses, jobs (msn.com)

Quote

Pfizer on Friday slashed its full-year revenue forecast by around 13% and launched a $3.5 billion cost cutting program due to lower-than-expected sales of its COVID-19 vaccine and treatment.

The drugmaker said it now expects 2023 revenue of between $58 billion and $61 billion, down from it prior forecast of $67 billion to $70 billion. It said the reduction was solely due to lowered expectations for its COVID-19 products.

Covid vaccine rollout shambles: Elderly and vulnerable Americans waiting with 'bated breath' as clinics across country still haven't received a single booster dose | Daily Mail Online

Quote

Worried about catching Covid, many vulnerable Americans are taking matters into their own hands by locking themselves inside, masking and testing again.

Seven million Americans have rolled up their sleeves for the updated Covid vaccines as of Wednesday, an uptick from four million Americans earlier this week, but still only two percent of the population.

Texas Senate passes ban on COVID vaccine mandates by private businesses | The Texas Tribune

Quote

The bill offers no exceptions for doctors’ offices, clinics or other health facilities. Senators agreed to let those entities require unvaccinated employees to wear personal protective gear or take other “reasonable” measures to manage the spread.

Quote

The vote comes after years of Republican attempts to reign in COVID-related restrictions like mask mandates and vaccine requirements. Supporters said the bill is critical to support individual rights to make their own health care decisions without negative consequences to their livelihoods.

“No one should be forced to make that awful decision between making a living for their family and their health or individual vaccine preference,” Middleton told senators during a bill hearing earlier this week.

Opponents argued that the coronavirus is still dangerous to many people, that it can lead to long COVID even in those who experience mild symptoms, and that the ban takes away the ability of health care professionals to institute vaccine policies that lower the risk of viral spread for their patients. It also, some critics say, infringes on the rights of business owners to make their own policy decisions.

Biden administration awards $500M for new COVID treatments | The Hill

Quote

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Friday announced it is awarding $500 million in grants to support the development of future COVID-19 vaccines and therapeutics.

The funds were granted through the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response (ASPR) as part of the federal government’s Project NextGen, which aims to enhance preparedness against future COVID-19 variants. HHS awarded $1.4 billion in grants through the same program earlier this year.

Among the recipients were the developers of two intranasal vaccine candidates: CastleVax and Codagenix. They were awarded $8.5 million and $10 million respectively.

Intranasal vaccines are rare but not unheard of. In the U.S., the spray flu vaccine called FluMist is approved for people aged two to 49.

It seems like these intranasal vaccines are not offered in most countries?

The current wave over here is quite bad. I'm seeing quite a few white people voluntarily wearing masks, so you know it's bad.

Real talk...I'm kind of shocked mask mandates ever left hospitals. I feel like the benefits far outweigh the annoyance of people having to wear them. (Though that's the case in most settings if we're being real, but especially so here.)

I continue to wear a mask at the vast majority of public places I go, but especially in a healthcare setting or plane you will never catch me without one again. 😷

Finally got it, three years later, from my Dad who was working at a homeless event, albeit masked. He didn’t have symptoms when I was around him initially but they showed days later, similarly to me. But his symptoms are much worse than mine, mostly given his neuropathy, high blood pressure and age.

Terrified mostly of losing my sense of smell and things longer term, but for now just feels like a bad cold. Although it’s been days and I’m still testing positive. I’m 100% positive it’s the J.1 strain.

If we hadn’t gotten vaccinated again in October this would’ve been ten times worse. The latest vaccine uptake rates are abysmal, it’s really sad.
