China is facing a new wave of Covid-19 infections that could see as many as 65 million cases per week by the end of June. This alarming prediction was made by respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan at a biotech conference in Guangzhou. Zhong’s estimate provides a rare glimpse into the potential impact of the latest omicron variant, XBB, which has been fueling a resurgence in cases across China since late April.

According to a Bloomberg report, XBB is expected to result in 40 million infections per week by the end of May before peaking at 65 million a month later. This comes nearly six months after Beijing dismantled its Covid Zero curbs, allowing the virus to spread rapidly among the country’s 1.4 billion residents. In the wake of this pivot to living with the virus, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention stopped updating its weekly statistics earlier this month, leaving many questions about the true impact of Covid-19 in China.

Zhong’s estimate suggests that this latest wave of infections will be more muted compared to the previous wave that hit China late last year and into January. At that time, a different omicron sublineage likely infected 37 million people every day, overwhelming hospitals and crematoriums and causing residents to scramble for limited supplies of fever medicine.

If the next pandemic (as bad as or worse than COVID) occurs within the next 10 years, most countries aren't going to do much, so good luck to all of us.

FDA panel recommends updating Covid boosters for the fall

Advisers to the Food and Drug Administration on Thursday recommended updating the Covid vaccines to target a circulating strain of the virus, while pushing for newer vaccines that provide longer-lasting protection.

The FDA’s Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee voted unanimously in support of tweaking the shots to target an XBB strain, as well as dropping the original coronavirus strain from the formulation.

The recommendation will now be handed off to the FDA, which is expected to make a final decision on which Covid strain to target soon. Drugmakers need enough time to produce and distribute the new shots, which are expected to be used as early as September as part of a fall booster campaign. X

Okinawa’s plea on COVID: Avoid visiting this summer if unwell | The Asahi Shimbun: Breaking News, Japan News and Analysis

Of the 27 medical institutions designated by the prefectural government as core facilities, six had suspended emergency services and five had stopped general care as of June 27.

The Okinawa Medical Association held a news conference on June 29 at which officials cautioned that COVID-19 cases could surge around the nation because Okinawa in the past had been a precursor in increases of cases before summer.

Yutaka Yamaguchi, a doctor in the 24/7 emergency care center at Okinawa Chubu Hospital, cited an alarming increase in the number of children and senior citizens brought to the hospital with serious symptoms.

“Infections are spreading among children and that has led to more adults becoming infected as well,” he said.

The emergency center has had to limit new patients because all its beds are taken.
