Genius1111 Posted December 17, 2022 Author Posted December 17, 2022 Observations of mask wearing in different countries Dublin, Ireland In the airport, no more than 2% On the streets, no more than 1% London, UK In the airport, probably 3%-5% On the streets, at best 3% Half the people wearing are non-white Canary Islands, Spain Mask mandate is still in effect on public transport and pharamcies. But other than that, no more than 1% when you step out further from those places Indonesia Very high % in the capital, but no more than 5% in the rural areas / small towns. I shall assume that there are more law enforcers in the capital, resulting in higher compliance.

In the mainland, there had been less than 10 COVID deaths in a month. Lunar New Year starts in 6 weeks and people will be returning back to their rural hometowns soon. Good luck to everyone in the rural areas, especially the healthcare workers. Jan 2023 will be like Jan 2020, only that multiple provinces will be experiencing crap like Hubei. For the elderly in China who wilfully not wish to get vaccinated, well, it may too late to regret now. Edited December 17, 2022 by Genius1111

Communion Posted December 19, 2022 Posted December 19, 2022 2 minutes ago, katara said: Yeah because China is known to be very truthful about the things they report so let's just trust everything they say without questioning Shanghai Media: *report the local government announcing policy of online education being put back in place due to the winter infection season* People in Shanghai: *post at length their reactions to this policy about how they feel with doing online education (with most supporting the policy out of fear of COVID)* What part of this is untrue to you? Do you think all Shanghai citizens are forced to lie on social media? These contrarian, conspiratorial stances really serve no purpose. If you don't like Chinese people, just say it. You can't meaningful discuss China's handling of COVID if all you have to contribute is some weird anti-China obsession. You can't claim "China is oppressing people with lockdown policies!!!" to then making the argument "no, China is lying when saying they're continuing specific policies! Don't believe". Like huh? Either you see the incoherence or you're trolling. Like how either people have common sense and see the inaccuracy of Western reporting or they just support such propaganda and encourage it be spread.

European and US officials are conducting careful behind-the-scenes talks with Chinese counterparts, while issuing deliberately worded public statements intended to make clear that the ball is in Beijing's court. ... China-exposed luxury firms such as France-based LVMH and industrial indices have traded down recently on Covid-19 concerns, and Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell signaled his worries last week. “China faces a very challenging system in reopening,” Powell said, adding that its manufacturing, exporting and supply chain remain critical. "It’s a risky situation." Health experts outside China despair that it may be too late to stave off a tragedy. "What do you do for a Category Five hurricane when it's an hour and a half offshore? If you haven't done it by now, it's too late," said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. "This pandemic is just going to blow through (China) in the next weeks," he said. “It's unfortunate they didn't think about this six or 10 months ago. They could have bought themselves time to be in a better position.” More than 160 million people in China are believed to have diabetes, and there are eight million unvaccinated Chinese over age 80, Yanzhong Huang, a senior fellow for global health at the Council on Foreign Relations said. Those are risk factors for severe Covid-19.

Genius1111 Posted December 20, 2022 Author Posted December 20, 2022 China’s improbably low coronavirus death toll has become an object of ridicule and anger for many within the country, who say it does not capture the true scale of grief and loss caused by surging infections. Health authorities reported only five covid-related deaths on Tuesday and two the day before, all of which were in Beijing. Both numbers were met with a wave of disbelief on microblog Weibo. “How come people only die in Beijing? What about the rest of the country?” one user wrote… …The State Council, China’s cabinet, in early December issued updated guidance on the classification and reporting of covid-related deaths. The details of the rules were not made public, but the respected Chinese publication Caixin on Saturday reported that the new procedure requires a ruling made at a hospital and within 24 hours. Deaths considered not directly caused by covid don’t count. It also raised the threshold for considering an individual to have covid. A patient must be found to have severe hypoxemia or a below 93 percent arterial oxygen saturation level, both of which would suggest the individual was severely starved of oxygen.

I really don’t understand why China hasn’t approved MRNA vaccines. There’s no scientific justification and they bought the rights to Pfizer already. - Given that over 248 million people have been estimated to be infected from December 1 to December 20 alone, it seems a matter of time before China fully re-opens. China was the last Covid stronghold and one of the only countries to still have travel restrictions.

I guess it is a mix of nationalistic pride in the ruling class as well as a desire to not be too reliant on the West. The latter is understandable, though unsurprisingly, mainlanders were making their way to HK and Macau to get their Pfizer vaccines. 248 million infected in 20 days... The way China would have snatched the crown back from the US for the greatest number of cases (and deaths) if they had been properly accounted for.
