All Too Well 10, Better Man and Nothing New alone would make it the best vault. But she didn't stop there, she added Forever Winter, I Bet You Think About Me, Babe and The Very First Night. See the thing is… Phoebe’s voice doesn’t fit on Nothing New, Babe’s production choices were peculiar (if she doesn’t take Jack’s farty trumpets away one of these days), AND it has Message In A Butthole, one of the least pleasant songs she’s ever made. All Too Well 10 is fine but it drags on an extra 2 minutes and has multiple shoe-horned-in verses that don’t fit with the writing style of the original because Taylor had to make **** up to meet the fan demand and I’ve always preferred the shorter version. As for the rest, they are 11/10 tracks. Better Music, I Bet You Sing Praises About Me, Forever Winner, and The Very Best Song are going to go down in history, I’m not denying that. I’m sure if I ranked those against the Speak Now vault by themselves, they’d surpass with ease, but they get dragged down by the bad neighbors, and overall the Red Vault ends up second best

Achilles. Posted February 11 Author Posted February 11 (edited) I was surprised to see the mixed reception for the Speak Now vault songs... and then I wasn't. Further proof of a deep generational chasm that divides swifties into two camps; the thirtysomething sophisticates with 15 to 18 years of fandom to their name, and an unruly kid crew with Lover avatars and tributes to 1989 in their signatures. It's not that the latter generation is a lost cause entirely, but they've clearly never heard a "Taylor Swift" — that is, they've never encountered an artist quite as talented as Taylor Swift, the singer-songwriter. "But I know Taylor! ‘I Knew You Were Trouble.’ was the first single I bought!" First off, ask for a refund. And no, you don't know Taylor, you know a very stilted and subdued version of the iconic songwriter; you know the watered down sellout. The Taylor of the Speak Now vault is Taylor as Taylor is intended to sound. She’s verbose and vulnerable. She wears her heart on her sleeve and heightens every emotion to the maximum degree. She prominently features guitars and pianos. She writes in complete sentences. (And yes, that's how she's supposed to do it.) She’s a real person, not a famous person doing her best imitation of one. She's fully engaged. She's expressive in ways that pop!Taylor just isn’t. She is brilliant. You have no idea how brilliant she is. The Speak Now vault is probably the purest attempt Taylor has made to harness some of that ineffable charm that made her early work so irresistible. I adore it. Edited February 11 by Achilles. 7

There's not a single bad song in the SN vault (though WEFIL is not my cup of tea), but there's nothing that come close to the legends that are on the Red vault imo (except maybe Foolish One that is a quintessential Taylor song to me, and Castles Crumbling that is a personal favorite). But that's still two legends vs six. Anyway, ranking the vaults: Red > Speak Now >>>>>> 1989 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>...>>>>> Fearless 1

Timeless Posted February 11 Posted February 11 I Bet You Think About Me ties with Is It Over Now? as the most overrated vault tracks of all time. IBYTAM is very unappealing. It's a very hardcore country song even worse than Debut. She also pretends to be poor in the song for no reason "I was raised on a farm, no it wasn't a mansion, just livin' room dancin' and kitchen table bills" .......... girl are you kidding me ..... THIS was your childhood home like bffr

Anyway, ranking the vaults: Red > Speak Now >>>>>> 1989 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>...>>>>> Fearless I will say that WEEVIL took a while to grow on me, but it's been hitting hard these days. It's got a ridiculously strong chorus, and I will always be a ***** for TayPiano moments. Fortunate One, Christ Is Coming, and Flawless will be appearing in my top 30 of the next discography rate (alongside Best Music and I Bet You Despise Jake Gyllenhaal Because Of Me). I can't believe I forgot to drag Dum in my earlier post, but I guess that proves just how forgettable and unenjoyable it is. I'm glad that our vault tastes are nearly the same. 1989 had some great songs (Is It A Grammy Winner? is currently pacing for another of the top 30 slots, but it might age on me, we'll have to see), but the rest is all sitting at a very competent 8/10. They're all great songs, but they don't stand out, and I have a feeling they'll be left to the scrap-heap of history. And yeah, the Fearless vault is a train wreck with like a listenable song and a half between them all so I'm glad we didn't know any better when we got it. That's A Win is a classic, and I enjoy some of the elements of Don't Pause but I wouldn't miss the rest if they vanished off of streaming tomorrow. You're All Better Songs Than Me is just... bad, We Were Bored is a slow dirge, Mr. Lost The Divorce Narrative is overhyped to the High Heavens, and Bad Bad Melody is so forgettable that the only thing worth knowing about it is that someone's Spotify glitched once and played the hidden backing vocals over the lead vocals and they were Aretha-tier. If only we could hear them in the actual song
SmittenCake Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Social media this entire week tried to say Taylor was polluting the earth bc of her private jets. But she's not even on the top 30 list. The selective outrage is real. 2

It's true that her family was certainly upper class for their mid-sized Eastern Pennsylvania town, but they didn't compare to Jake's family history in Hollywood and him growing up in Beverly Hills in 'elite' circles. There are probably a million houses of this size/value across the US, but very few that come close to where Jake grew up. 1

THIS was your childhood home like bffr Hardcore country = good. Idk why yall think the house pictured is some sort of mansion. It’s like a normal sized 3 bedroom house with a bonus sunroom tacked on the side, and maybe a semi-finished attic (judging from the windows, but those could just be decorative). This is very much an upper-middle class house, not some sort of elite residence. If it was an expensive property, it was likely due to acreage / location. Edited February 11 by Achilles. 4

There was a whole lot of press about it selling for a little under a million dollars a couple years ago, and discounting the fact that there is a premium on Taylor Swift's old house™, almost 10% of homes in the US (Or 10.3 MILLION in total) are valued at over $1M It's a beautiful, well maintained house in a nice neighborhood, but it's 3500 square feet with 4 bedrooms and the sunroom. That's bigger than average, but it's not even close to mansion status. 1
Josh Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Why is it that you cannot praise Taylor without someone hating you as if you just killed their mother? It's only around Grammy time do people hate Taylor so much on here but the rest of the year they'll love he

Taylor and her family lived in a nice house in a small city (as would make sense for her father as an investment banker in that small city) and I don't think anyone is calling her "ordinary middle class", but Jake and his family were a part of the 0.1% of the elite. 1

Anyways, I agree that IBYTAM’s attempts at portraying the class differences are ridiculous. It’s very “new money vs old money” petty nonsense (she was already a multi-millionaire by the time she met Jake, so it’s just silly). That house still isn’t a mansion. There are literally thousands of houses of comparable square footage on the market right now in every state, some of which are half the price (and thus quite affordable) and some significantly higher. Cleanromantic Posted February 11 Posted February 11 Whew, so many wrong takes in here: 1- @wastedpotentialcheered, lori herself said she acted as the usual Taylor co-writer, she prepared tee and cheared her on. 2- @Timeless, there's a difference between the upper-middle-class/ wealthy environment Taylor grew up in, and the environment Jake and his Beverly Hills friends grew up in. Jake is literally a descendant of Swedish royalty or something. It's affluence/ generational old money vs wealthy normal people, and she makes that distinction clear in the song. Her family still had their feet on the ground while Jake and his circle are the type of people who like pretentious fads and self-help books. And I bet you think About Me is excellent, it's one of the best pure country songs in her discography. I think some of you need to stop spending time consuming r/neutralswifties and Baguettologist narratives and just enjoy the music. 4
