#71.  Cruel Summer (+25) - 86K *new peak

It's up around 20% compared to yesterday... Is it viral on TikTok or something?

It's because I’ve been playing it on a loop

Spoiler

or could be that it’s been so cold these past few days that people want something to remind them of warmer times :celestial2:

And on the topic of genuinely disliking/hating some of Taylor's songs, I have a rather short list:

A Place In This World

Stay Beautiful

A Perfectly Good Heart

--

Untouchable

Innocent

(@wastedpotential don't come for me, love you )

--

Stay Stay Stay

This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things

I Forgot That You existed

Snow On The Beach

throw in Macavity also because lord knows I hate this one :rip:

And the Debut songs are up for a re-evaluation after the TV.

Yeah my list is rather short tbh.

A Perfectly Good Heart

Sparks Fly

How You Get The Girl

This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things

Gorgeous

New Year's Day

I Did Something Bad

ME!

I Foegot That You Existed

Like 9 songs from her entire discography doesn't seem bad to me.

Posted (edited)

No one can compose a bridge melody like Her. Or bridges in general.

And we truly thank her for keeping bridges alive in music during this TikTok era of 2 minutes songs.

There are songs I would go out of my way to listen to less often, but still. It shocks me to see people labelling 1/3 of each album as a skip or something :deadbanana2:

I think it has to do with a lot of them being hybrids. Cuz I only stan Taylor sure I like other artists but idgaf about them like that. So yeah the thought of disliking half an album or the entirety of one is a foreign concept to me. I only do that with my other fave artists that I dont really care about.

The only Taylor album I dont really use as often is debut and its not because I dont like it it's just that it's so buried in her discog so I  never get around to it lol

Idk I just always found it overhyped tbh. It's not that I like hate hate it but I find myself switching it off :rip:

Enough is enough with Gorgeous ( and StayX3 ) slander. :beatfreak:

It’s that naive, quirky, whimsical, dorkish side of Taylor and the essential core from where the greatest songs of her discography have risen.
There is a difference between infantile and immature and in some songs’ cases, it gets even more apparent, especially when people discard something on basis of that. The truth is, with her “infantile” songs is that she still knows how to capture the very essence of the theme she is writing about.

There is no Lover without London Boy.
There is no Slvt without Gorgeous.
There is no Snow on the Beach without I Think He Knows.
There is no Mad Woman without Look.

etc.

Her greatest ability is extracting primordial human state and emotions both throughout more cheeky songs ( which is actually her core talent and pretty great, but some will just opt to minimise it ) and deeper sounding material. She stays true to how people feel no matter the age. Someone in love understands equally good both ME! and Lover. Someone hurt understands equally both Afterglow and Mean.
At the end of the day, it shows her range from going from stellar comedy to stellar drama.

Time to listen to Slvt. It being one of her best traction driven Vault songs shows me why she had had dilemma choosing between it and Blank Space originally. :bird:

Why have we stopped harassing her so that she releases Need again?

The production starting with the second verse, the last chorus :gaygacat5:

This is asking for a lot I know but does anyone have a comparison between Cruel Summer and Anti-Hero in terms of GOAT Hot 100 points week over week? I wonder if CS is trailing AH during their 25th week in the top 10. I imagine it’s also trailing it in overall weeks (36). I remember AH spent most of its weeks in the top 10 in the bottom half outside of the 8 weeks at #1, while CS has had a more equal run in terms of  time spent in both halves of the top 10

Honestly these are reasonable, I don't think about them enough to muster any hate but I can understand :gaycat6:

The only shock here for me is Snow On The Beach, the others are absolutely bottom-of-the-barrel. I can go back to Macavity from time to time because I love the theatricality of her voice, but it's such a sideshow compared to literally everything else she's ever put out

My list of songs that I genuinely don't think have any redeeming qualities and have not streamed in years is pretty ******* short too:

Stay x3

WANEGBT TV

TIWWCHNT

IFTYE

ME!

I think we all decided that we didn't really want a song where She makes a fool out of herself proclaiming how badly She needs Joe Alwyn :ryan3:

The production is cute and the Aretha vocals in the background of the chorus are excellence, but Taylor isn't dredging that narrative up anytime soon

Spill :clap3: She is a diverse songwriter and that’s why she’s so beloved and acclaimed. People will put down her campy, non-serious songs like Karma and say that is a weakness of hers, but it’s actually her strength. Legendary acts of yesteryear like The Beatles or Elton John became legends because of their versatility — they wrote on both ends of the spectrum. Both the campy, unserious, what annoying internet stans of 2024 would deem as “childish”, and then the serious, detailed, nuanced style, for lack of a better description.

Also, I’m not even a Lover hater, but it is funny how the three songs I genuinely hate from her are all from that album :deadbanana4: (IFTYE, ME!, YNTCD)

I don’t like Stay x3 either but I get its appeal for some, so I can’t put it in the ~objectively bad~ category.

Same, I should’ve redacted the maybe

DSF-Say-It-With-a-Tiffany-Pollard-GIF-se

100% this

of course the rockists wouldn't admit the Beatles have a lot of childish lyrics and simple Melody songs, or if they do It they're gonna explain like "It's Genius anyways cause.." (:monkey:) but yeah Elton has the songs they put on these playlists like "piano ballad classics" "songs to Scream in the car" "guilty pleasures" "80s themed party", "Rock classics" "lgbt disco anthem"

Taylor has the same large spectrum.

There's just that Christmas song thingy going on in the song that exhausts me. I hate the production. And since the melodies and lyrics are a nothing burger imo, they can't even save the production in my eyes. I understand why people would like it though.

Yeah, nothing surprising in your list, except maybe IDWLF that I really enjoy.

But let me add WANEGBT TV and Style TV to my list cause I forgot we could also erase the Taylor's Versions. :ryan3:

Someone submitted “tea” to deuxmoi that Taylor is preparing a surprise Grammy performance of the single for the next TV and that the performance will start with a friend whispering something before launching into an “iconic song.”

It reeks of BS but we need it to be true because the obvious answer here is Jack saying “nothing good starts in a getaway car” followed by a performance of that song. :duca:

I can understand not loving the Christmassy elements of SOTB though I really love them :gaycat6:

Frankly I think Zayn and Taylor have horrendous chemistry, and I know for a fact that Taylor was whispering in Gigi's ear for years to dump that man :ryan3:

Spoiler

I actually have grown to love Style TV. Maybe it's a self-induced deluded hallucination, but it's been hitting hard lately :ryan3:

She has released like 220-230 songs at just 33, in just 17 years.

Having bad songs is pretty okay. 80% of artists are not rapper release less original songs in all their career.
