They were the 6th and 7th singles from an album that had already sold like 10M WW and following 5 smash singles. Them bombing is not only inconsequential in the slightest it's also quite normal. And even if them flopping mattered, IDWLF smashed after so...

I'm not saying Reputation SHOULD have smashed because 1989 smashed (otherwise, no artists who ever had a smash era would ever flop), but as long as the music was good and she rightfully addressed the Kanye drama, it was bound to be a success. I'm not saying she had nothing going against her, but things were clearly not as bad as it is often portrayed, at least in the real world (can't speak for the stan world cause I was clearly not invested like that at the time).

The second-half of 1989 was disastrous to her brand.

She was in deed at her lowest during reputation, and yet it still smashed without major promotion (see Lover era) and has become more revered now, both by the critics (not that they bashed it anyway) and the GP.

1989 and IDWLF smashing had nothing to do with reputation’s “success”. Great music can stand on its own.

I’d like to see how Lover/folklore would’ve done if it followed 1989, say example, the lead singles were IFTYE and Mad Woman, as equivalents, narrative wise to LWYMMD.

I just know it wouldn’t be the global pop event that was LWYMMD.

Of course having a big era/hit prior to another album is beneficial. It creates hype and anticipation. That's true for literally every artists. Then it's only up to the artist to make a quality record (which Taylor did with Reputation) that will bring in the longevity.

This doesn't make sense because LWYMMD was made specifically to address all the controversies. Not IFTYE or mad woman.

To be fair, despite other songs from her discography being bigger (SIO/BS etc...), at the time not a single thing in Taylor's career was an event in the way LWYMMD was. It was in the conversation in France of all places!!! And even since then only The Eras Tour can compare in terms of global event.

Just to recap because I don't want to keep this debate forever cause it makes no sense going back and forth indefinitely: yes, Taylor was at her lowest in terms of public perception before making Reputation, but I truly think that the impact of this backlash is blown out of proportion.

Yes sure, praise an article written by a far right lunatic just because they happen to hate Taylor. How low can you get honestly? You OTHS are seriously deranged i swear :biblio:

I'm pretty sure the National Review also hate Beyonce but don't let your lack of principles keep you from sleeping at night i guess.

The readers on National Review also think the article is crazy. They dragging the author pretty badly saying that Taylor would have written a much better diss article .

Good to know. Articles like that are so badly written, it's actually insane. Not being a Swiftie is one thing but the kind of arguments OTHs uses are so... weird and disconnected from reality.

I’m currently listening to random Taylor songs and I’m not sure what the general consensus is regarding The Way I Loved You, but I honestly think it’s one of the best songs she’s ever done. It was always a highlight for me on Fearless and it’s aged like a fine wine.

It’s a rollercoaster kinda RAAAURRRRRRSH!

The Way Christ Loves You (Lord's Version) is sheer Fearless era EXCELLENCE, and the streaming numbers (312M and 550k/day despite being a 2 year old re-recorded country album track that she's only played live like once since the Fearless Tour and went viral on TikTok ages ago) reflect that

Oh wow, those streaming numbers are great, it really is Taylor’s world at this point.

Her discography as a whole is just so immaculate so I love how successful she’s became because it’s nice seeing somebody as talented as her actually getting their flowers. :allears:

Amen to that! I've been a fan for over 10 years and sometimes i still can't believe how insanely successful she is, especially everything that happened post-Midnights. She truly has one of the best female discographies of all time and her success is 100% deserved.

It's actually crazy to think that Taylor NEVER flopped in her entire career. Even her very first single, Tim McGraw, went top 40 on the BB100 and top 10 on the country charts. And she never looked back since then. Which is one of the reasons she has such vicious haters, she just never stop winning.

It’s crazy because I remember already thinking she was a big name during Fearless / Speak Now but she’s just gone to an entirely new level now. :deadbanana:

It still feels like yesterday that I listened to Fearless for the first time, which is one thing I love about music, the ability it has to transport you back in time. After I became hooked on that album, I went and purchased a copy of her self-titled album and was also pleasantly surprised to find out I also loved that one. I feel like her debut album gets slept on a lot, but I used to listen to A Place In This World, The Outside, Tied Together With a Smile and Should’ve Said No so much during my college years.

I’m basically the same age as Taylor, I think she’s just a year older than I am, so it’s been cool growing up with my fellow Sagittarius sister and being able to share a lot of similar life experiences through her songs.

The other day somebody called me a Taylor Swift stan and I was confused, as I don’t really refer to myself as being a ‘stan’ - but I can’t deny being a Swiftie considering I’ve been listening to her for 14 years now. :bird:

TELL ME ABOUT IT! I absolutely adore her debut album and sometimes i feel like i'm the only one. I understand it's not her best overall but it's a very solid first album and people should put more respect to its name.

I don’t think it helped with how strong / successful Fearless was as it sort of eclipsed her debut and Fearless was also the album that really put her on the map internationally.

I can’t wait for Taylor’s Version as she’s evolved a lot vocally since then and I can’t wait to hear A Place In This World and Tied Together With a Smile with her current vocals. I also think songs like Picture to Burn are going to really benefit from new instrumentals.

Yeah, you're right. Fearless is truly the album that turned her into a megastar. But people tend to forget that Debut was very successful too, it established her into the country scene and laid the foundations for the massive fanbase she got.

I'm mostly can't wait to hear Mary's Song with her new vocals, it's gonna be magical.

It was definitely still successful in the US, but I think Fearless really made her a big name worldwide as her debut got to #81 here in the UK and Fearless debuted at #5 - but country music isn’t as popular here as it is in the US, which I’ve always been annoyed by as I love country music.

Mary’s Song is top 5 for me, so I’m right there with ya! It’s actually going to be quite emotional hearing the re-records for the first time as I think it’s pretty much guaranteed at this point that it’s going to be the last TV release. :chick3:

Yeah, Debut TV will be the last for sure. Probably the least hyped too but that's ok, at least i'm sure it'll go #1 when it comes out, the original never did (even if #5 is not a bad position). Debut TV is gonna make me cry, i just know it.

I can imagine it being an emotional experience for Taylor to record, as it must be strange going back and recording songs you wrote when you were so young.

I’m not sure how it’ll do commercially, but I could imagine Picture to Burn (Taylor’s Version) becoming a hit.

Cold As You (Taylor’s Version) is coming for that Christmas #1 :WAP:
