My expectations for the vault content are nothing short of unreasonable. :rip:

Imagine calling Midnights a bad album when it gave us Maroon and High Infidelity, two of her best songs.

hmm, i have heard people say they're in a good girl gone bad era, but not any of rih's other albums. it's just an immediately evocative title.

G*** sitting at 91 while it took Taylor a decade to receive an ounce of acclaim. This just makes the  scores for Her recent albums and re-records feel less legitimate. IDC if this gets reported I’m just venting :lakitu:

Gutter is not good. It's barely listenable. It deserves 61-71, not 91.

Not gonna say this in a different thread, but Taylor definitely did a lot to popularize the whole "eras" concept. Other artists have definitely done retrospectives of their career or showed off different iconic outfits during a performance, but Taylor was the first time I've ever heard people in real life literally talk about an artist's different "eras", or say stuff like "I'm in my folklore/Red/reputation era right now

This 100%.

the whole “im in my _____ era” thing that people have started saying, started because of the Eras tour/Taylor’s Eras. OTHs aren’t gonna like it, but it’s literally a fact. And it’s become a very well known thing.

You have to put things into context though. Back when Taylor was starting out, women in mainstream pop (or country) music were still not taken seriously by critics, sans a very few examples. It was especially bad for young women, and her making music that was aimed at young women who could relate to her life phases was another layer added to discount her work. Her earlier albums always landing in the upper 70s was actually a very rare occurrence back then, not to mention the retrospective acclaim lots of her projects have seen. It’s hard to judge what critic scores even mean anymore when almost anyone can score 85+, so those 76-77 scores back in the day were comparable. Basically you have to adjust for inflation :eli:

With that said, I definitely agree though with the sentiment. For example, 1989 is absolutely the biggest reason for the wave of Poptimism, yet it didn’t get to reap the benefits from it (at least initially) :rip:

And I’ll never get over the 8.0 and 7.9 for folkmore from P4K. They’re obviously good scores still, but when many other subpar albums received the same or higher than that it just feels insulting.

Time to mention yet again that Pitchfork reviewed Ryan Adams' cover of 1989 but not the actual album when it came out :rip:

And yes, I think nowadays critics are reluctant to go all in on young and/or female artists like Olivia, which of course is a good thing but it also inadvertently leads to grade inflation. Pitchfork is probably the one place with the least inflation in comparison with your conventional media outlets, tbh.

It’s been awhile since we praised The Great War and Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve, huh?

I still remember listening to the Midnights l word and then being WHIPLASHED when she released the 3am tracks and the intro to The Great War penetrated my soul :jonny5:

Can't believe now we have to deal daily with what Olivia team publishes about Taylor on daily basis

Like if you hate her so much why even talk about it

She's gonna sweep at the VMAs but will she be attending tho

Posted

I think a good option is just stop giving that girl attention (if you're not into her music), because she clearly benefits from it.

do we think she's attending tonight?
