Well, it's certainly not going to come if this is accepted as a self-fulfilling prophecy. I really don't believe for a second that there's no demand for a couple of shows in London, Berlin, Paris, etc. at least.

Let's hope she's coming next year

I think it’s totally fair to argue that High Road killed the post-Rainbow momentum. Whether that was her team, her wishes, her vision, etc. is all speculative as Tom said, but regardless, the choices made were not GP-friendly, and not fan friendly either considering we got 6-8 recycled tracks.

In this regard, her versatility is her Achilles heel. She can do SO much, but that leaves infinite directions she can take. We talk about the folk album like a ghost of Christmas past, but it is retrospectively interesting to think about where her career would be if she released that style of record and then followed it up with Gag Order. She received comparisons to Fiona Apple and Björk with GO (which sometimes makes me laugh because of how unreal it seems) but it’s clear that she could have fully embraced the anti-pop route and succeeded amongst acclaim-oriented outlets.

The shadow of her massive success as a pop megastar sadly informs most of her post-Rainbow career as well. High Road pandered to the gays and it became a joke. She then releases the album of a lifetime, thematically similar to Rainbow, and it makes no noise. Like Collin said, it would be awesome to see her fully embrace the alternative route. If she keeps trying it with pop, it will only limit her audience more unless she’s able to recreate *her* version of A/C.

I completely agree. If she had released the folk album after Rainbow and then followed it up with GO I feel like her career would be in a completely different place. Obviously she woudn't really be considered a pop girl anymore but by trying to go back to pop after Rainbow, as you've said, killed any momentum she was getting from the Hot AC audience and didn't do her any favours with her older fans because the music sounded dated and recycled, and the vision was really messy.

I wish High Road leaned more into the alt-pop route. She kind of experimented a little bit with My Own Dance (not a fan of the song but its a direction I would've liked to see her explore more), but instead the collection of songs we got was such a confusing, messy and (I hate to say it but) unexciting compilation of songs that thematically and sonically don't really fit together at all. I'm not really sure what went on to cause this, it may have just been that with everything going on her vision was skewed or confused and she probably surrounds herself with a lot of yes men these days who didn't really check it.

She's definitely in an interesting position post GO; if she sticks with this post-pop, alternative sound there's a chance that over time she could build up a solid new fanbase and manage some success, but there's also a chance with each release she could fade more and more into obscurity. To go back to pop would be a risk too - obviously whatever she tried to do on High Road didn't click and derailed a lot of her momentum, but I wonder if she created a pop album that was a little bit more concise thematically and sonically, sounded a bit more current or innovative and was just of a better quality, would she have a chance to pull back in some of her long-time casual listeners? Surely. Now would that equate to a commercial success? I doubt it, but if she can pull it off she may be able to get even just a little viral moment ala Praying or Kylie's Padam Padam, which could be just what she needs to get her career back on track.

Alternatively I could see her leaning back into her punk-pop sound for the next album, given that Olivia Rodrigo has shown there is a market for that and that's definitely a direction Kesha has wanted to explore more. Whatever the case, whatever the direction for the next album I just hope she serves another Gag Order in terms of quality and consistency, regardless of the genre and how it performs commercially. Animal, Rainbow and GO are such excellent bodies of work that really do well at this, whereas Warrior and High Road more just sound like a random compilation of pop songs with some bops thrown in. Lets hope she sticks to the former.

Gag Order lands at #24 on Rolling Stone‘s Top 100 Albums of 2023 :clap3::clap3::clap3:

Kesha, ‘Gag Order’

On her fifth LP, Kesha is tired, angry, and vicious. She unspools her feelings as she can across 13 scorched-Earth tracks that present an artist pulling herself back up from the brink of madness. Working with producer Rick Rubin, she has found a psychedelic middle ground between the sleazy synths of her 2012 breakthrough, Warrior, and the rootsy Southern rock of 2017’s Rainbow and 2020’s High Road. She may never find the rainbow she once sang about, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t radically advocating for her own happy ending. The album even ends with “Happy,” a weary but lovely ballad dedicated to life not turning out the way you hope. As she sings on that song, she’s gotta laugh so she doesn’t die. Even that is its own kind of victory. —B.S.

Tour is over. It's a damn shame she, for some reason, won't tour Europe and Asia.

She managed to snatch Rick Rubin so it seems like her witchcraft is working. Alternatively, she can be locked with Pebe and Hudson Mohawke in a room for 2 months and make us an album.
