Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo (born March 16, 1988), better known as Jhené Aiko or simply Jhené, is a American singer-songwriter and recording artist from Los Angeles, California. Formerly signed to The Ultimate Group and Epic Records, she left both labels in order to continue her education. In 2007, Aiko made a return to music, in an interview she spoke on the choice saying “Shortly before I conceived my daughter, I stepped back into the field and took a meeting with a label head. In this meeting, I was innocently told, to ‘sell’ myself when walking into these meetings. “That’s when I decided I would ‘sail’ myself rather than sell myself.”

She released a mixtape on March 16, 2011 entitled Sailing Soul(s) via her official website, JheneAiko.com. All the songs on the mixtape were written by Aiko, except “July” which was written by Micah Powell and most of the songs were produced by Fisticuffs, except “July” and “You vs Them” which were produced by Bei Maejor, “Real Now” which was produced by Roosevelt, “Do Better” which was produced by J. Lbs and “Growing Apart” which was produced by Tae Beast. The album's artwork was shot by photographer Jay 3. The mixtape also features collaborations from Miguel, Drake and Kanye West as well as others.

In 2012, Aiko met with No I.D., record producer and vice president of A&R at Def Jam, who ended up signing Aiko to his Artium Records imprint through Def Jam. Jhené Aiko released her debut EP Sail Out on November 12, 2013.

Little bit random, but I just love when she does things like this. I hope she does a live album at some point.

She really does. Hopefully, we'll get some new music soon, or at least a peek at some of the things she's been working on.

I'm thinking maybe it'll be like the last two album releases...a single or standalone this Fall/Winter and then album late next year.

If I'm remembering correctly, those releases were a little bit different from each other, right? Trip rollout started late 2016 and then was released fall 2017. Then Chilombo officially started summer 2019 (or late 2018, if we're counting Wasted Love) and released in spring 2020.

I'm not sure how she'll do things this time around since it seems like she has a lot in the works. I'm interested to see how it all unfolds/fits together.

yup both kind of had stand-a-lone starts before official singles. "Maniac" into "While We're Young"/"Hello Ego" for Trip and then "Wasted Love" into "Triggered"/"Fairy"/"HOE" for 'Chilombo'

New show intro is definitely giving Trip 2.0 vibes. Probably an interlude or something from the ARK project.

What more can you share about the upcoming sequel with Big Sean?

With the first Twenty88, we were playing characters — and that was really fun because we both like to act, and love watching movies. Expect more theatrics on the next one. I’m working on a few other projects too that I’m really excited to share. I don’t want people to be disappointed if it doesn’t happen when I want, but it will be when the time is right, because I like to be intuitive with my releases.

Project(s)

Keep on teasing 'Twenty88' Sequel

I'm excited.

I read this interview yesterday and I'm a little surprised at how she, for the most part, is just carrying on with things even though she appears to be very pregnant. Lol. Not saying that as a bad thing, I'm just wondering the timeline of everything. I have no doubt she'll do what's best, but hopefully, she'll take as much time as she needs/wants and doesn't feel pressure to do anything so she can enjoy her pregnancy and growing family.

But, yeah, I'm very excited for whatever projects she's working on. Maybe she'll release her jewelry line soon. I think it's been close to or over a year since she first starting teasing it.

I'm thinking the baby is due like September/October...or late August lol. She was originally going to do Day N Vegas early Sep, but that whole festival is canceled. Maybe that was going to be her last show.

Her choreographer put "counting down the days" in the comments.

Her manager's wife is also pregnant and she said her due date is only a few weeks apart from Jhene's. I don't know when her manager's wife is due though. Lol.

I'm pretty shocked that it seems she intends on honoring the rest of her scheduled festival performances. I really thought she was only going to do Mo Pop Festival since it's in Detroit and Sean is also performing. I think his last show, as of now, is in late September, so maybe you're right and she's due around that time or October.

A new @jheneaiko era is upon us. Taking it back to simpler times, when we just put music out for the love of it. Apologies @defjam and team, this one is for the Soulmates.

IT'S INCREDIBLE.

Her voice is the prettiest that I've probably ever heard it sound, but this song isn't doing it for me. Maybe it's because she's been teasing this type of sound since 2021, or that I think the music/lyrics are too simple in places, or that I think she's done this better before (i.e. Frequency), but it's just not interesting, in my opinion. I'm guessing this is for the mantra mixtape she recently referred to in her Instagram comments. Maybe I'll like something else on there, though I'm not very hopeful considering her family and friends commenting that this song was their favorite. I hate to sound so critical. I think I'm just kind of disappointed.

All that being said, what her manager posted and her mention of Def Jam is interesting. It'll be interesting to see what that type of strategy looks like, the results, and how involved the label will be.

I think this is just like a "Wasted Love" for whatever the fuller new era will be. This is literally for her fans. A Mantra of thankfulness, gratitude, and peace through the turmoil (could be timed strategically around this TMZ news that her car was stolen). I absolutely love it for what it is especially once I read the lyrics along with the song. I think they are saying favorite for the lyrics. The lyrics are beautiful as a spiritual person. It's code to live by everyday. I'm more than confident that she's going to do exactly what she did with 'Chilombo' and shock the hell out of us just for the simple fact that she put this on IG for the fans. This is the "Maniac"/"Wasted Love"/"Mirrors" before the actual start. I was told that this is "Just the beginning"

I don't think the TMZ story has anything to do with the timing (Jhene said her car has since been found with nothing stolen or damaged). I think it was planned to coincide with the release of the Allel signature necklace (March 30) that everyone's been waiting on.

I understand the spiritual aspect of it, but I just don't like the sound of this particular song. Hopefully, I'll like the other material that she has coming. I'm excited to see how everything plays out since it seems she's doing things differently this time around. I agree that debuting a full song on Instagram was shocking. Lol. So I'm sure things will be interesting.
