charts discussion DAY 7: Normani’s “Fair” | One Week Later And It’s OUT Everywhere!

This girl is plagued with label issues. It's definitely not her choice to release one song per year - that's just her saving face and making it seem like she's in control of her career. No new solo artist with no solid track record has that kind of power. She would have been dropped from the label long ago if it was her delaying everything. Either the label doesn't believe she's fully arrived as an artist or they're just not satisfied with the material she comes up with and keeps making her go back to the drawing board.

She has good management behind her because they managed to raise her profile, bag her brand endorsements, and keep her name in mainstream music conversations all the time despite a troubled music career. Hopefully she can leave her label soon.

The CEO of RCA was at the Fair release party on Thursday night. Normani’s family and friends have tweeted over and over that RCA is on her side and the resident Normani insider has also confirmed they’re on her side to see her succeed. Normani is the perfectionist and a lot of the delays are her.

So she's mismanaging her own career then. This should not be a fullout single, there needs to be a followup expeditiously.

"I'm a perfectionist" is a common PR response to cover up for the label shelving her material. The girls used to say this back in the day when they were not yet in a position where they could put their labels on blast (Jojo, Nicole Scherzinger, etc). I'm sure they want her to succeed, which is why they keep shelving her material that is not up to par and still invest in her so she can come up with something new.

honestly the best thing she could do right now for her career is just release an album, or an EP. just put out a body of work, even if it isn't a huge success right away or doesn't have a huge smash hit to support it, having a body of work out paired with some good visuals would probably help her build a bigger fanbase.

It’s #86 on Apple Music US, which is not great but at least it’s top 100 there. R&B songs don’t pull numbers on Spotify.

If she wants to save her career she needs to release a project now. Literally anything at this point because the 10 month wait between singles isn't cutting it anymore. The material isn't good enough. Fair is serving Tinashe's Pretend. A cute album track but not noteworthy in any way, and certainly not single material.

 

I know it's much easier to say in hindsight but she really should've released an album following Motivation. The song did decent on radio and has great streams (300m on Spotify). The pandemic would've worked in her favor like it did for Doja, Dua, Jack Harlow, etc. who took advantage of industry heavy-hitters being MIA.
