D/X Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 (edited) Hi everyone, welcome to another attempt at doing a Best Of. You can check my last year's thread so you know what to expect. Once again, just 5 straightforward updates. Hope y'all like 1 or 2 things from the lists. Recap Part 1: Songs: 50-41 · Series: 10-06 Part 2: Songs: 40-31 · Flicks: 10-06 Part 3: Songs: 30-21 · Series: 5-1 Part 4: Songs: 20-11 · Flicks: 5-1 Part 5: Songs: 10-1 · Clips: 5-1 Edited December 26, 2021 by D/X
D/X Posted December 19, 2021 Author Posted December 19, 2021 (edited) 1 Let's begin. 50-41 First part, opening with the "I should've stayed at home" songstress and Ms. Superspreader: Not her best but definitely a standout, even for a fifth or fourth single. The kind of song you sing when you're at a Zoom call with your incompetent team. This gave me retro vibes but don't know from where. A rare discovery. A funtastic 80's infused pop song that truly gives sweet and cute overload. Not Purity Ring's best but still a solid one. Tbh, this could've been higher if released earlier. It's truly Alfie's best so far, and very pop-ish. My distracted ass recently discovered that this song is a message against conversion therapy. Truly one of those songs with fun/dance-y vibes with a darker meaning. LGBT+ Queen. The very first song I listened for this year. Both video and song give this Friday night vibes with friends. Yet another LGBT+ anthem dedicated to all the beautiful community, after one of SHAED's member came out. It's been a while since White Lies caught my attention. The Depeche Mode inspiration is strong in this one. Text-Friendly Version: #50. Dua Lipa - "We're Good" #49. Royal & The Serpent - "I'm Not Sorry" #48. Friedberg - "Lizzy" #47. Japanese Breakfast - "Be Sweet" #46. Purity Ring - "Sinew" #45. Alfie Templeman - "3D Feeling" #44. Aurora - "Cure For Me" #43. Biig Piig - "Feels Right" #42. SHAED - "Colorful" #41. White Lies - "As I Try Not To Fall Apart" Edited December 19, 2021 by D/X
D/X Posted December 19, 2021 Author Posted December 19, 2021 (edited) 10-6 This was the first year I watched a lot of series, considering I was a hater. COVID her impact. Call me trashy but I liked this one. An improvement from the first part with more focus on the actual magic and the mystery behind the keys, although that finale was lackluster compared to S1. No surprises here. Although that finale was NOT it. Once again call me trashy for watching teenage Netflix shit, but Mindy truly knows how to make me laugh. And that finale, Jesus. Here for S3. Succession could've been way higher but this season was underwhelming, slow and redundant... up until those two last episodes. TV Masterpiece. Truly one of the most unique entries in the MCU. Gave a lot of development to two "side" characters and basically made a cultural reset to the universe. Text-Friendly Version: #10. Locke & Key - Season 2 #09. Squid Game - Season 1 #08. Never Have I Ever - Season 2 #07. Succession - Season 3 #06. Wandavision Edited December 19, 2021 by D/X
TalkThatRihanna Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 The graphics here are great! Yeah I agree about Squid Games, the show was good but the finale was... a choice
Lazuli Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 the graphics are GIVING cure for me, be sweet and we're good LOVE wandavision
KasioKas Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Firstly, terrific graphics!! Secondly love seeing another series ranking, loved squid game and didn't mind the end outside of the big reveal and excuse.. I started succession from scratch so didn't get a chance to watch it yet, now I get to binge so VERY excited! Wandavision is a masterpiece imo in terms of subject matter but remaining attached to the superhero genre and mcu and not feeling out of place.
TheWayWeWere Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 graphics are fucking amazing We're Good getting some love it's such a bop
Remmy Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Nice graphics! I barely watch any shows so I'm glad a Marvel series is here! WandaVision was an EVENT, I don't know if they'll ever be able to recreate something like that. Still the best MCU Disney+ entry so far. || Never paid much attention to AURORA but I like Cure for Me Oop I never noticed that message though! We're Good is cute, needed some time to grow on me and then it got stuck in my head here and there throughout the year.
Mr. Loco Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 We're good deserved to be a smash, is an underappreciated gem WandaVision was actually great!! I really enjoyed it
ATRL Moderator Tsareena Posted December 19, 2021 ATRL Moderator Posted December 19, 2021 wandavision/ succession amazing
Sunderland 4ever Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Awesome layout. Looks modern and retro at the same time. I love Be Sweet. As for Squid Game, I haven't watched it, but know what happens in it because of all the memes revolving around that TV series.
Ewan Chaos Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 Wow the graphics. SLAY! Had no clue Purity Ring released anything this year Be Sweet is flawless. We're Good is... fine.

Although I think that its pace and plot are not that consistent, the finales / last episodes of each season blow your mind. Agree completely with Wandavision, felt very refreshing but still with the MCU at its core. Absolutely, Wandavision still has a LOT of impact, and totally agree that I don't think we'll ever see that once again in the MCU. So far it's their best series. D/X Posted December 21, 2021 Author Posted December 21, 2021 2 Give it up for the second update. 40-31 I do really hope y'all know or like something from this set. There's something nostalgic and kinda obscure from this rarity of a song that I love. An actual ATRL discovery! A fun song about boredom during COVID lockdowns. The first of COVID-inspired songs in this list. CHVRCHES came back with more power pop songs, this time with a strong dose of feminism. BROODS once again delivering alt pop perfection, perhaps weaker than previous first singles, but still without losing their touch. You can really tell when it is an incoming gen Z artist as this has to be the shortest song I've ever added to my playlist. Don't know why but this gave me Miike Snow meets Capital Cities vibes. The Titanic reference also makes me think about how real-life tragedies are turned into blockbuster just then be turned into fun songs... if there's more than 100 years in between. Another good song from this couple, and while more catchy, it's one of their darkest. Bastille have been on high and lows ever since 2014. This is definitely a high one. And yet another movie-inspired song. A very shocking and unexpected return! So glad to see them back and with their insane riffs and unique sound. I swear I thought this was gonna be a hit but oh well. Still a fun catchy song about chemicals. Text-Friendly Version: #40. Getters - "Blindsided" #39. Sarah And The Sundays - "I'm So Bored" #38. CHVRCHES - "Good Girls" #37. Broods - "Piece Of My Mind" #36. Spill Tab - "Name" #35. Cosmo's Midnight - "Titanic" #34. Oh Wonder - "Rollercoaster Baby" #33. Bastille - "Thelma + Louise" #32. Sleigh Bells - "Locust Laced" #31. Girl In Red - "Serotonin"
D/X Posted December 21, 2021 Author Posted December 21, 2021 10-6 So after being a long time movie theater experience defender, I've become a full streaming stan. All movies included here are based on their digital/streaming release date, so no Eternals or No Way Home. Since COVID impacted releases and basically the whole industry, some 2020 digital releases are included here. To be honest I was expecting NOTHING from this film and I was very impressed: the production design, cinematography, performances, concept... up until that third act. I guess that's why critics were mixed, but it's not that bad. It could use a little tweaking, but technically is flawless. Not gonna lie: I did fall asleep and the glacial pacing it's definitely a problem. But the rest, once again technical, is literal artwork. Even more, that ending... my jaw dropped. I loved the concept and the execution (minus the unnecessary 2 + hours). I'm a lowkey ODH. I despised people overhyping this film and saying that it was gonna be this gen's LOTR, HP or Star Wars. LMAO. Nevertheless it was really well done, but the mesianic story came very late (specially being over fucking paprika). And the gazillion weird ass names thrown at your face under the first 4 minutes and for the rest of the 2 hours was annoying. Yet here it is. Flawless production design, makeup, and Queen Emma was perfect. The story was kinda ridiculous but overall it was cute. Oh, and that SOUNDTRACK. This is one of those 2020 or something films included in this list. I was very surprised at the high concept for such a relatively "unknown" film, and how it blended dark comedy with full-blown drama. Love this type of hidden sci fi gems. Text-Friendly Version: #10. Last Night In Soho #09. The Green Knight #08. Dune #07. Cruella #06. Synchronic
