I Love Change by Pale Waves :) haven't gave all there stuff a listen yet though

Wow some truly fantastic picks here I can't even list them all (Erika, Faye, St. Vincent). Little too much Olivia for my liking tbh but good 4 u is a valid inclusion!

Posted

good 4 u & Deja vu are bops and great songs! Love the Olivia domination :alexz:  I don't stan for driver's license tho

Posted

okay! part of the fun of having my lists just out there and on the first page is I can mess around with the rest. As I mentioned I went through and rated a bunch of albums so here are some interesting stats based on my ratings:

Lowest Scorers:

Lake Street Dive - Obviously (1.7)  - the worst album I'd heard all year and one of the worst albums I've ever heard!

Painfully un-fun in every sense of the term. Insipid lyrics, awful Target commercial reject melodies, bad vocals, utterly meaningless.

It's the kind of experience where your life is better for not hearing it.

Vibes: Pop, listening to the worst person you've ever met sing karaoke about uneventful things that happened in their day

James Blake - Friends that Break Your Heart (3.0)

Ugly sounding album that is dull and banal. Nothing is achieved throughout the entirety of its runtime.

He basically renders himself and any previous work useless.

Vibes: idk... pop but like really bad pop? Songs about Jameela?

Chloe Angelides - Friends Who Failed at Love (3.4)

Just so boring that I can't even say why you shouldn't listen to it. This is the kind of album where it's literally just filler, unnecessary white noise that nobody would be worse or better of hearing. Next.

Vibes: Who knows/cares just skip this

Hiatus Kaiyote - Mood Valiant (3.5)

Faux artsy try hard nonsense. It's just audial clutter and has no reason to exist.

Vibes: A person who talks at you rather than with you, the sound check at a jazz concert

Ed Sheeran - = (3.7)

I don't hate basic pop bops but he can't even accomplish that so what are we even doing here

Vibes: music you only hear 3.4 seconds of because you've already switched the radio station

Ashe - Ashlyn (3.8)

Who releases an album filled with ballads? Who is this girl? No lyric here is hard-hitting at all. She's like Julia Michaels but with less artistic merit.

Vibes: The random tracks that are in the bottom third of a Spotify playlist that's called "In My Feelings" or "Sad Girl Shit"

Park Hye Jin - Before I Die (3.8)

Just really weird and nonsensical. At the very least I'd say listen to it for comedic value.

Vibes: We can fuck, we can fuck
We can fuck, we can fuck
We can fuck, we can fuck
We can fuck, we can fuck
We can fuck, we can fuck
We can fuck, we can fuck
I wanna fuck, I wanna fuck

Justin Bieber - Justice (4.0)

He sucks so bad. There's two good songs here and the rest is just like who even cares? The audacity of including an MLK Interlude and the audacity to record and release Peaches should have him jailed.

Vibes: Justin Bieber. So... bad vibes

Joshua Bassett - Joshua Bassett EP (4.1)

Why does he sound so flat and bored all the time? Why did he take all this time to say absolutely nothing?

Vibes: You fell asleep watching a Disney+ original series

Hayley Williams - Flowers for Vases/Descansos (4.3)

Listening to this makes me feel like a loser

Vibes: Hayley Williams, snoozy folk

--

Honourable Mentions:

Maggie Lindemann - Paranoia (8.0)

Solid pop-rock fused EP. I think it's very teenage angsty but it's also very fun and quick, I enjoyed this a lot at the beginning of the year.

Highlights: Knife Under My Pillow (see songs list), Different, Scissorhands

Vibes: Pop-rock, pop-punk, there's a random screaming song

Aly & AJ - a touch of the beat... (8.0)

I'm so impressed that this is the sound they're doing now. Truthfully they were already great in their Disney days, but I feel like this is a bright, summery, mature vibe that still feels very them. It's got a good amount of personality and I can't say I dislike any song. I just grew out of it a bit but still think its worth mentioning!

Highlights: Pretty Places, Personal Cathedrals, Listen!! kind of reminds me of something from Insomniatic

Vibes: Synthpop, Summery pop, a couple Fleetwood Mac-esque moments

Erika de Casier - Sensational (7.9)

Super smooth and loungey but it has enough personality to make it feel interesting. The tracks pull from other genres but it feels very cohesive and Erika's voice is smooth and kind of gentle/wavering in the best way. I would've probably rated this higher if I vibed with the loungey stuff more, but truthfully I have to be in a mood for that.

Highlights: Better Than That (see songs list), Drama, Busy

Vibes: R&B, UK Garage, sort of like a high rise elevator but in a good way

Spellling - The Turning Wheel (7.9)

I didn't think I'd like this... and at first I thought it was just "fine" but it did grow! I guess this is more for the baroque pop type crowd, but I do love that the second half has more electronic influences. I wouldn't be spinning this a lot but I enjoyed what it was.

Highlights: Queen of Wands, Magic Act, Little Deer

Vibes: Artpop, Baroque Pop, Darkwave moments

Tkay Maidza - Last Year Was Weird Vol 3 (8.7)

Quite the score! I wish I wanted to listen to this more but when I did I really enjoyed it. Just another solid release from Tkay. If you already know her/like her you'd like this, if not you'd still probably like it because she has a lot of versatility and variety that there's something for everyone.

Highlights: Cashmere, Syrup, Onto Me

Vibes: Pop Rap, R&B, Trap

Halsey - If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power (7.8)

Super cinematic with stellar production, Halsey takes a step forward with this release and avoids some of the bogged down cliches of her last two albums. I think this is an album that others would like more than I did, but I just appreciate that she's trying something new and aims to push herself forward.

Highlights: Easier Than Lying, You Asked For This, I Am Not A Woman I'm A God

Vibes: Rock, Alt-rock, Synthy stuff

Kacey Musgraves - star-crossed (7.8)

One of several acclaimed/anticipated artists who sort of fizzled out this year, Kacey's album conceptualizes her divorce and explores the life after I suppose. It's somewhat basic in it's explorations but I do think the songs are pretty and I like the subdued nature of it. It just doesn't feel like an album I could have on my BEST OF if you know what I mean?

Highlights: Hook-up Scene, Justified

Vibes: Pop, Dreampop maybe?, An album that scratches the surface but that's about it

Sufjan Stevens - A Beginner's Mind (7.7)

I was surprised I liked this so much! I thought it would be kind of boring and samey, but oddly enough I just found it really beautiful. I think his voice is kind of hard to get into (at least for me) but that aside idk this was a fun surprise.

Highlights: It's Your Own Body, Lost in the World, Fictional California

Vibes: Indie Folk, Singer-songwriter, it's kind of artsy but not in an inaccessible way

Grouper - Shade (7.7)

This is a weird album. You can barely hear her which I guess is the appeal? The album is half indie folk songs that are fine, and half these really unusual songs that feel like vintage, 70s radio feed. It's like the kind of music you'd use if you were making an ARG or doing like a The War of the Worlds Orson Welles kind of radio show thing

Highlights: Kelso (Blue Sky), Unclean Mind, Followed the Ocean

Vibes: Indie folk, ASMR but if you like to relax to creepy stuff, listening to a ouija board

Twice - Formula of Love (7.7)

I wasn't that big on K-Pop this year and haven't been in a while, but I still check out some of the major releases because why not. Twice have had some underwhelming moments in their career but I actually really liked their out put this year. Alcohol Free is a fun Bossa nova bop, but this album especially has some really solid tracks. The single is one of the weaker moments, the rest has some slick K-pop.

Highlights: Espresso, Cruel, The Feels

Vibes: K-Pop duh, Someone looking for pop bops, fans of Twice I guess

omg i love these graphics :gaycat4:

deja vu number one song :clap3:love the male fantasy placement, such an underrated closer!

I likes some songs from the Hiatus Kaiyote album x

The rest deserved the lashings though especially Lake Street Dive and Ed!

I didn't really vibe to the Grouper and Sufjan albums but I like the rest of the HMs.

40. serpentwithfeet - Fellowship (Neosoul)

It's cute! It actually isn't even my favourite but I think the charming feeling that it's a song about friendship is what draws me in.

39. MUNA & Phoebe Bridgers - Silk Chiffon (Indie Pop)

It's a bop idcccc. The marketing of this song is so true though, the amount of people who can't just have FUN

38. H.E.R. - Damage (R&B)

While the album was more or less the same song for 20 tracks, I think Damage is particularly pretty. It has a solid throwback vibe to it that pulls from Janet influences but it stands on its own.

36. Summer Walker - Ex For A Reason (R&B)

Massive bop. Definitely the feel that I was looking for when it comes to Summer

35. Charli XCX - Good Ones (Electropop, Synthwave)

I see why people are reluctant but I think CRASH will slay

19. Addison Rae - Obsessed (Synthwave, Experimental)

When that other song drops its over for all pop girls. People need to get over themselves with this girl because this song is surprisingly cool and daringly catchy

17. Olivia Rodrigo - good 4 u (Pop-rock)

A fun kiss off type song. I think it could've gone harder but you don't know how excited I was when I found out there was pop-rock on this album. Besides she's my artist of the year.

10. Jazmine Sullivan - Pick Up Your Feelings (R&B)

One of my favourite R&B songs in a long time, it just feels like a big power move

9. SZA - Good Days (Dreampop, R&B)

It's so pretty and fun, I miss SZA

6. willow - Transparent Soul (Pop-rock)

pop-rock anthem [2342]

5. Olivia Rodrigo - drivers license (Indie Pop)

I haven't listened to a song more. I probably won't like a debut single more for a long time. She is the moment for a reason. That reason is earnest songwriting and fantastic bridges.

3. Billie Eilish - Male Fantasy (Indie Folk)

The true closer! HTE is obviously a climactic moment, but I like the soft reprise of MF which I think brilliantly summarizes the themes of the album

Stanning these :clap3:

Damn ma this is so much :jonny5:

Change, Fallen Fruit, You Lose!, Silk Chiffon, Good Ones, @elio.irl, At the Holiday Party :clap3: Halley's Comet didn't do much for me, Male Fantasy outsold - and your ML description is so accurate, I've BEEN telling people this! OMG finally someone else has Samia on a damn list! She made multiple appearances on mine last year and I felt so alone

Daddy's Home + I Know I'm Funny haha have some cute moments, don't love them overall. Happier Than Ever (album) could've been stronger. Love Hayley so much but yeah, FLOWERS for VASES really was too snoozy. Aly & AJ getting a shoutout, yup!!! :alexz: We have the exact same trinity for Tkay's EP
