Best Singles of 2021

Part Three

30. Baby Queen, Narcissist

On “Narcissist,” Baby Queen delves into the intricacies of her mental health issues and how society influenced them. “I see the same magazine criticize my generation / and I find it kinda weird you’d critique your own creation” perfectly sums up the thesis of the song, and is the perfect rebuttal to nearly any inter-generational sparring. We’re only as fucked up as our parents made us!

29. Carly Pearce, Never Wanted to Be That Girl

(feat. Ashley McBryde)

“Never Wanted to Be That Girl” is a great collaboration between two of the best “new” women in country music. Thematically, the song is divided between a wife and a mistress. It’s a solid song, but the lyric could have been a bit stronger; as it’s written, it’s not so much a conversation between the women as it is a detached study in the similarities of their situations.

28. Barbra Streisand, I’d Want It To Be You

(feat. Willie Nelson)

Barbra Streisand dropped this collaboration with Willie Nelson from her vault, and it’s a lovely song dripping in nostalgia. They make frequent references to their iconography, and somehow it just works really well.

27. Olivia Rodrigo, Driver’s License

A solid debut single.

26. Agnes, 24 Hours

Bop. Bop. Bop.

25. Yola, Diamond Studded Shoes

Yola veers away from the folksy music of her debut, but still put forth some very strong material including this song about class divides.

24. Snoh Aalegra, Lost You

Great song.

23. Wolf Alice, How Can I Make It Okay

The chorus is perhaps the most “Tegan & Sara” thing I’ve heard another artist do since “All You Had to Do Was Stay” and I love it for that.

22. Noname, Rainforest

Noname raps about trying to cope with the anxiety of suffering the consequences of global catastrophes that the average person is too insignificant to do anything about. “How you make excuses for billionaires you broke on a bus?” she asks in the chorus, and it’s just so true. Also, love her adlibbed “man, fuck a billionaire” later on; she sounds so pleased saying it.

21. Japanese Breakfast, Be Sweet

Excellency.

Thanks for your comments! I’m gonna try to wrap up the singles list by NYD!

Kiiiii not the rush release :gaycat3: Never been in love with Ianaw, iag unfortunately. I Still Have Faith In You is the best out of the tracks I peeked at, but none of them hit me like their classics do. Starting Line + Hot N Heavy :clap3: You Shaped Hole yesss a banger! Never heard of Black Hole before (listened to a bit & it sounds decent) but the rest of your top 5 had high placements on my lists :jonny5: You snapped!! Taylor #1 as she should be :worship:

Top Albums of 2021

10. ABBA, Voyage

They came back strong. I love them for randomly plopping a Christmas song in the middle of the tracklist; only a legend would dare!

9. Billie Eilish, Happier Than Ever

A definite downgrade from her last album, this would be an absolute dud if not for its title track.

8. Sufjan Stevens, A Beginner’s Mind

He did Sufjany things.

7. Yola, Stand for Myself

Far less country than her debut, but just as soulful.

6. Bo Burnham, Inside

”White Woman’s Instragram” is a masterpiece and “Problematic” is pop perfection.

5. Agnes, Magic Still Exists

It’s always nice to see some Swedish pop perfection produced by a Swedish pop star.

4. Lil Nas X, Montero

We are so lucky he is the queen of the gays.

3. Baby Queen, The Yearbook

Baby Queen is an incredible songwriter. I don’t know if she’s a swiftie or not but I’m going to assume that she is because one simply  cannot write songs like “Dover Beach” and “You Shaped Hole” and not be influenced by Taylor!

2. Carly Pearce, 29: Written in Stone

Carly Pearce made the Great Divorce Album of 2021 and not nearly enough people have taken note of it.

1. Halsey, If I Can’t Have Love I Want Power

I literally never willingly listened to a Halsey song in my life before she dropped this absolute masterpiece. That cliche about motherhood inspiring great works of art holds true in Halsey’s case. The songwriting is sharp, poignant, and powerful—to say nothing of the brilliant art-rock production. And that short film! Whew! We appreciate a queen who appreciates high concept, high budget pop-art!

Gonna get into Agnes at some point (same with Yola, as I mentioned before.) "We are so lucky he is the queen of the gays." #NotMyQueen :oh: Lowkey can't stand him. Yeah HTE could've been stronger for sure, has some great highlights but WWAFA & dsam wash it. The Yearbook yup!! :clap3: If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power #1  Definitely an improvement over Manic, and this feels like the type of music that she should've been making for a while!
